Diplomas and certificates collection, 1801-1954.
The collection is composed of diplomas and other types of certificates awarded to individuals through the years 1801-1954. It includes oaths of allegiance and pardons given after the Civil War; certificates of membership from fraternal and patriotic organizations; commissions and appoitments to political office; licenses to practice medicine and law; certificates recognizing military service during World War I; and diplomas from education institutions. An 1824 patent is also in the collection. Some of the educational institutions represented in the collection include Chunnenuggee Female College, the University of Alabama, the Graefenburg Medical Institute (Dadeville, Ala.), Tuskaloosa Female College, the State Normal School (Jacksonville, Ala.), Lowndesboro Female Institute,the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina, Harvard University, Tuskegee Female College, Cumberland University, University of Louisville, and Georgetown University. Organizations represented in the certificates include the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Freemasons, the Erosophic Society, the Philomathic Society, and the Sons of Temperance. Governments awarding appointments and commisions in the papers include the Confederate States of America, the United States of America, the French Republic, the state of Alabama, and the state of Georgia. Individuals receiving awards in the collections include Agnes Baggett, Peter A. Brannon, Thomas E. Calhoun, Jefferson Davis, William Tinsley Dent, John H. Forney, Elias N. Kaiser, Robert A. Mosely, Marie B. Owen, Thomas M. Owen, Helen Rosentihl, Philip M. Shepard, Addison G. Smith, Edward D. Smith, Thomas Vickers, George P. Waller, T. H. Watts, Annie E. Wheeler, and Adolphus F. Wilson.
