Title: Records concerning the Medical Library Association, 1931-1958.

This collection of records concerning the Medical Library Association, 1931 to 1958, includes correspondence, papers from annual MLA meetings, and miscellaneous material. McDaniel served as president of the MLA from 1946 to 1947; the correspondence from 1947 and 1948 documents his influence as past-president of the organization. McDaniel served on the Executive Committee and the Program and Entertainment Committee during these years. Included are numerous letters concerning the preparation of the Proceedings of the MLA for publication in the "Bulletin of the Medical Library Association". Other correspondence concerns the formation of committees and the appointment of committee members. Series 2 contains records from annual meetings of the MLA. Included are registration forms, programs, banquet menus, minutes, amendments to the by-laws, committee reports, and other miscellaneous material. The annual meeting of 1947 is the best documented in the collection. Of special interest are the numerous committee reports from this year; several reports concern the effects of World War II on American medical libraries and address such problems as the increasing cost of foreign journals due to rising post-war inflation. Included in Series 3 is miscellaneous material pertaining to the MLA. Present is the MLA Secretary's Manual (1939), a list of medical subheadings prepared by the Library of the New York Academy of Medicine (1942), MLA financial records (1945-1946), and other miscellaneous items.

Collection of records of the Clerk of the Section on Medical History of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, 1953-1982, consists of correspondence, annual reports, financial records, and lecture announcements, and covers the terms of eleven former clerks of the Section on Medical History, including Nicholas Padis (1954-1955), Herbert J. Dietrich (1958-1960), Robert J. Gill (1960-1961), James F. Toole (1961-1962), Frank P. Brooks (1962-1963), Robert E. Jones (1963-1965), Roderick L. Tondreau (1965-1968), Harry G. Gianakon (1968-1971), Vaughan P. Simmons (1971-ca. 1972), Lawrence Charles Parish (1973-1975), and Steven J. Peitzman (1980-1982). The collection includes letters from Samuel X Radbill, Whitfield J. Bell, and Fred B. Rogers, all active members of the Section. Other notable correspondents include W. B. McDaniel, Elliott Morse, Richard Harrison Shryock, Marion Fay, Joseph T. Freeman, Randolph Shipley Klein, and Albert S. Lyons. Also included are letters from many of the individuals who presented lectures before the Section on Medical History.

Title: Presidential papers of Lewis C. Scheffey, 1918-1966.

This collection of Lewis Cass Scheffey's papers, spanning 1918 to 1966, documents his involvement in various offices, committees, and sections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The bulk of the papers date from 1955 to 1958, the years in which Scheffey was President of the College. Also included in the collection is material relating to his participation in numerous local and national organizations. The papers in Series 4, spanning 1955 to 1961, document the activities of various sections of the College, including the Section on Medical History and the Section on Public Health, Preventative, and Industrial Medicine. The Section on Medical History is best represented; included are letters from historical librarian W. B. McDaniel, chairman Samuel X Radbill, and Fred B. Rogers, all of whom were especially active in the section. Also included is a letter from noted physician E. B. Krumbhaar. Series 5, spanning 1950 to 1966, includes information on various fund raising divisions of the College. Of special interest are Scheffey's papers from the Building Fund Committee; these records document the College's vigorous campaign to raise funds for an expansion of the library and for other repairs to the building on 19 South 22nd Street. Included in these papers are numerous pieces of correspondence from Richard A. Kern, chairman of the committee. Papers pertaining to the administration and award of various prizes and lectureships sponsored by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia are contained in Series 6. Series 7 documents Scheffey's involvement with various local and national organizations, including the American Cancer Society and the Council on International Visitors, a consortium of Philadelphia-based organizations that provided information and aid to foreigners visiting the Philadelphia area.
