Katherine Mansfield was born in New Zealand, and also lived in England. During her Bohemian and rather brief life, she made significant contributions to the art of short story writing as a major 20th century writer. Her fiction is characterized by crisp metaphorical prose, a graceful yet inescapable sense of irony, and, above all, a unique and irresistible degree of observation.

The collection consists of E.M. Watkins' extensive research on D.H. Lawrence and his contemporaries. There is a 3700 page typescript of excerpts from Lawrence's letters and journals, in addition to chronologies of the lives and works of D.H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, John Middleton Murry, the Bloomsbury group, James Joyce, and others. Mrs. Watkins' purpose in amassing this material is unknown. This collection is divided into four series of handwritten and typewritten excerpts from other works about the Lawrences and their friends and contemporaries: The first series, Typescript of D.H. Lawrence Research Notes, consists of E.M. Watkins 3700 page typescript of research notes from various sources about D.H. Lawrence and excerpts from Frieda Lawrence's journals and correspondence. Series II, Bibliographic Sources and Indexes, consists of an index to people mentioned in the manuscript, a Lawrence bibliography, notes on the bibliography, and three boxes of bibliography and index notecards. Series III, D.H. Lawrence Friends and Contemporaries, contains material about Lawrence's friends and contemporaries and the literary milieu of pre-1939 England and France. Series Frieda and D.H. Lawrence were very close friends with Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry, and this series includes material from their journals and letters. Other writers represented include James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, Bertrand Russell, Lady Cynthia Asquith, Lady Dorothy Brett, and Aldoux Huxley, Virginia Woolf and Leonard Woolf. Series III also contains chronologies of Lawrence and his contemporaries, drawn up by Watkins about people and events from 1882-1968, as well as Lawrence correspondence and reminiscences of Lawrence by his friends, from previously published sources. Series IV, Miscellany, contains notes and excerpts from various authors, including Marcel Proust.

Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1929-1967.
Weyhe Gallery displayed works by Dorothy Brett early in her career. Her breathless letters to Zigrosser are full of the progress of her painting; details of life in Taos; difficulty of selling her work and placing it with dealers; praise of her work by John Marin, Alfred Stieglitz, and Awa Tsireh; the exploits of Georgia O'Keeffe, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Frieda von Richtofen Lawrence, and Rebecca Strand; memories of Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry; her growing confidence in her painting; criticism of Aldous Huxley's book Point Counter Point; sharp comments on the death of D. H. Lawrence ("unmitigated stupidity"); the poor art market during the Depression and money trouble. After a silence of 32 years there was an exchange of letters in 1967.

Carl Zigrosser was a follower of the popular English psychologist (and follower of Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff) A. R. Orage. Included in this correspondence with Carl Zigrosser and Florence King are clippings and advertisements, essays by and about Orage, a circular letter from Gurdjieff on the death of Orage, and an obituary for Orage. Topics covered in Orage's letters to Zigrosser and King include notices about meetings and lectures, monetary gifts to Gurdjieff and his Institute, the well-being of the Gurdjieff circles in England and America, advice about acting on Orage's principles, and information about the National Social Credit Association. Copies of letters from Zigrosser to Orage ask for advice and help with defining some of the terms used by Orage and Gurdjieff. There are also pages of notes made by Zigrosser. Also included in the folders ar letters from Jessie Dwight Orage and Gorham Munson, an essay by Olgivanna Wright about Katherine Mansfield, announcements for The New English Weekly, and a photograph of Orage by Ansel Adams.

Morrell, Ottoline Violet Anne Cavendish-Bentinck, Lady, 1873-1938. Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Title:
Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Correspondence makes up the bulk of the Ottoline Morrell Collection, supplemented by a few holograph and typescript manuscripts by Morrell and other authors. Among the letters in this collection are many photographs and sketches provided by the authors to Morrell. The small Works Series contains holograph drafts of two articles by Morrell, the first a description of some of her memories of D. H. Lawrence and the other a review of an early critical work on Lawrence's writing. Also included are notes she took on a trip to Ireland in 1919. The Correspondence Series contains outgoing (1911-1938) and incoming correspondence (1894-1938). Outgoing correspondence is made up of holograph letters which Morrell wrote to her friends and acquaintances. There are a few letters written for fund-raising and other business purposes, but the majority are personal letters. Incoming correspondence forms the bulk of this collection with well over 2,500 letters, mostly personal, written to Morrell on various topics of art, politics, World War I, literature, and the gossip for which Bloomsbury was famous. Within this series 1,782 letters from Bertrand Russell thoroughly cover their lengthy relationship. Other accumulations of letters are present from Clive and Vanessa Bell, Augustine Birrell, Elizabeth Bowen, Dorothy Brett, Dora Carrington, John Cramb, T. S. Eliot, Mark Gertler, Frances Hackett, Augustus John, Henry Lamb, Frank Prewett, Siegfried Sassoon, Lytton Strachey, and many others. The Miscellaneous Series is divided between works, correspondence, and materials by Bertrand Russell. The works include poems and short essays by other authors, including a collection of poems by Frank Prewett. The correspondence portion contains letters between Morrell's friends and quite a few letters to Philip Morrell. Of particular note is the correspondence between Philip Morrell and Frieda Lawrence regarding the legal issues of D. H. Lawrence's estate. The final section contains works by Bertrand Russell and a number of letters from him to other people, including a group of letters to his brother written from prison.
