Title:
Papers of George Ring, III [manuscript], 1925-1987.
The collection centers on Ring's interest in the hybridization of rhododendrons and his activities as officer and committee member of the American Rhododendron Society. Topics include rhododendron growing advice; exchange of plant material; nursery orders; articles; talks; activities of the Potomac Valley Chapter; and special projects including research for chapters in "Hybrids and hybridizers," the Nearing Study Group active in locating and propagating plants introduced by Guy Nearing, a project to rate rhododendron performance in severe heat and cold, and a "good doer" survey of best growing varieties in each area of the country. The contributions of Joseph Benson Gable, a pioneer rhododendron hybridizer from Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, are a major topic. There are files from the Gable Study Group to list Gable azaleas and rhododendrons, efforts to collect correspondence and biographical material re Gable, his contributions and colleagues, particularly Guy Nearing, and Henry and Maletta Yates; notebooks of research material on him; and four of Gable's own notebooks on rhododendrons. The collection also contains nursery and supply catalogues. Correspondents include Sam Baldazea, Janet E. Binford, L.C. Case, Weldon Delp, Caroline Gable, Joseph Gable, Russ Haag, August Ernest Kehr, Robert P. King, Howard Kuhn, David G. Leach, Philip A. Livingston, Marion May, George Miller, Guy G.
