Correspondence (transcripts), 1835-1838.
Transcripts of letters to and from Samuel Parker. One letter is from Samuel Parker from Lexington, Missouri, to his family on his journey in April 1835. The second letter, addressed to his wife is sent from St. Louis in August of 1835. He describes meeting the Flatheads, the Nez Perce, and the Spokane Indians. The third letter is by Narcissa Whitman addressed to dear brothers and sisters and was sent in July 1836 from "beyond the Rocky Mountains." Narcissa Whitman talks about her future home and the journey. The final letter is sent from Jane Prentiss to Mrs. Samuel Parker, dated September 1838 and talks about the Whitmans and the Spaldings. This letter says "copy of a letter owned by Mr. Alexander Mack of New York," but it is not known when it was transcribed. There is no indication of the location of the original copies of the other letters.

Sager account, ca. 1860.
This collection consists of a photocopy of the account that Catherine Sager Pringle wrote of her family crossing the Plains. It describes her parents dying on the journey; adoption of Dr. & Mrs. Whitman and the Whitman Massacre. The account by Catherine Sager Pringle was typed on stencils in March 1854 by Celista Collins Platz, Catherine's grandaughter. The copy of the manuscript was given to Washington State Library on 2 May 1975 by Celista C. Platz. Because it was never edited or modified in any way, today it is regarded as one of the most authentic accounts of the American westward migration.

Statement of Rev. A.M.A. Blanchette's Interpreter Concerning the Whitman Massacre [manuscript], circa 1847-1900.
Copy of a typed statement recounting the reasons the Cayuse Indians killed Dr. Marcus Whitman, his wife Narcissa, and their fellow missionaries in the incident commonly known as the "Whitman Massacre." The author and interpreter is only identified by the name "Louis." A note attached to the front of the document states that this copy was found in the Frederick Bickel home, circa 1955, and appears to be a copy of a legal disposition. The document is undated, and is unclear as to if the statement was taken shortly after the murders, or if it was recorded several years later.
