Financier and manufacturer; b. in South Kingson, R.I.
Rowland Gibson Hazard was born in South Kingstown, Rhode Island on October 9, 1801, the son of Rowland and Mary (Peace) Hazard. He was raised in the home of his maternal grandfather, Isaac Peace, in Bristol, Pennsylvania and attended school in Burlington, New Jersey. He returned to Rhode Island in 1819 and, together with his brother Isaac Peace Hazard, began managing the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company established by his father in 1800.
Rowland Gibson Hazard was involved in a number of public activities. As a vocal critic of the institution of slavery, he associated himself with the Free-Soil Party. He was also active in the early affairs of the Republican Party, serving as a delegate to its 1856, 1860, and 1868 conventions. At the 1868 convention in Chicago he served on the Committee on Platform and drafted the financial plank of the party's platform. He served as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1851-1852, 1854-1855, and 1880-1881, and from 1866-1867 was a member of the Rhode Island Senate.
Rowland Gibson Hazard was also a prolific writer who produced a long list of philosophical works during his lifetime. His most notable works include the Essay on Language (1834), Causes of Decline of Political Morality (1841), The Philosophical Character of Channing (1844), The Freedom of the Mind in Willing (1866), and Causation and Freedom in Willing (1869).
He was a close friend of the English philosopher John Stuart Mill and of William Ellery Channing, the founder of Unitarianism. As a public benefactor, Hazard contributed to the schools and churches in South Kingstown and endowed a professorship of physics at Brown University with a gift of $40,000. In 1845, he was awarded an honorary L.L.D. degree by Brown. Married to Caroline Newbold of Bloomsdale, Pennsylvania, Hazard had two sons, Rowland and John, the former of whom had a distinguished career of his own. Rowland Gibson Hazard died in Peace Dale, Rhode Island on June 24, 1888.

Title:
Records, 1869-1956, bulk 1872-1926.
The records are incomplete, scattered, and in poor condition. Most date to the time that the Carolina Mills Company ran the mill (1872-1926). Materials relating to the owners' business and financial activities include account sales sheets, annual reports, correspondence, check registers, order books and bank statements (1869-1956). Records of purchases and sales include incoming and outgoing invoices and receipts (1869-1926). Of particular interest are workers' time sheets (1914-1916) which list workers' names, hours and, in some instances, pay.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

DeWolf Papers, 1751-1864.
Title:
DeWolf Papers, 1751-1864.
Two-thirds of this collection is made up of documents and correspondence. These are generally concerned with privateering in the War of 1812, plantation operations, and politics. The bulk are letters addressed to James DeWolf (1764-1837) and his brother John DeWolf (1760-1841). Account books, cargo invoices, bills and receipts make up an unusually small part of this mercantile collection. The privateer Yankee is quite well-documented by eight account books and a log-book. Other financial records include a few slave invoices, plantation records, and bank shares.

Peace Dale Manufacturing Company. Records, 1742-1919 (inclusive) [microform].
Title:
Records, 1742-1919 (inclusive) [microform].
Records, 1829-1919, of the textile firm, with earlier records of enterprises of the Peace, Hazard, and other families. General accounting and production records, orders, sales, and correspondence, much of it with the Peace Dale firm's selling agents: S.B. and Buffum (1854), Jenkins and Huntington (1860), Fairbanks and Martin (1871), and Martin and Buffum (1885). Preceding this period, there are records of many other activities. The earliest is a daybook for 1742-1744 of the Trenton Mills, one of the flour mills owned by Joseph Pease. Other early records are a cash book, 1785-1788, of Isaac Pease; a daybook, 1761-1781, of S. Neyle; accounts, 1785-1791, of Abraham Newton, postmaster, Charleston, S.C. Accounts of the Hazard family in Charleston include those of Rowland Hazard, 1789-1790; Hazard, Robinson and Company; and Hazard and Ayrault. The family owned plantations on the Santee River, where sheep were raised, flour was prepared, and the usual farming operations carried on. From 1817 to 1850 there are accounts of Rowland Hazard's sons, Isaac P., Thomas R., Rowland G., and Joseph P. Isaac and Rowland acted together as partners, 1820-1829, carrying on a cotton mill in South Kingston and a general store in Providence, R.I. Many investment interests of the Hazard family are represented, including the Providence and Stonington and the Narragansett Pier Railroads, and the Wisconsin Central Railroad. Other letters, 1869-1886, are from Herbert Spencer concerning railroad investments, and papers on the Credit Mobilier, 1876 and later.
