Gallaher family. Gallaher family papers, 1800-1924.

Title: Gallaher family papers, 1800-1924.

Chiefly family correspondence of several generations of the Gallaher family of Charles Town, W. Va., owners of the Virginia Free Press, along with some subscription, circulation, and advertisement records for the newspaper. Letters of the related Wilson family include some from Alpheus Waters Wilson, a Methodist bishop in Baltimore, and Augusta Virginia Wilson, a Methodist missionary on the Creek Reservation in Oklahoma (1887-1890) and at Chihuahua and Guadalajara, Mexico (1890-1898). One letter mentions two African-Americans who were boxed up alive and sent to Philadelphia.

Correspondence, subject files, writings, financial records, appointment books, notebooks, scrapbooks, clippings, photographs, miscellaneous papers and memorabilia produced or collected by Warren A. Candler, clergyman, editor, and educator. Most correspondence is official in nature and reflects the various positions Candler held, 1877-1934, related to the Methodist Church. Topics include the organization of Emory University in Atlanta; mission work in Cuba, Mexico, and Asia; rights for women and blacks, and anti-lynching campaigns, women's suffrage, prohibition, and the Democratic nomination of Alfred E. Smith in 1928. Also included are Emory College financial correspondence and records (1887-1915) and family letters. Correspondents include prominent members of the Methodist Church and the Atlanta business community.

Title: Alpheus W. Wilson papers, 1854-1916.

The collection consists of the papers of Alpheus W. Wilson, his wife and father from 1821 to 1916. Correspondence is between Wilson and his wife, Susan; Wilson with his daughter, Nina; and Susan Wilson's with Nina. Topics addressed in Wilson's letters include Baltimore during the Civil War (1861-1862); travel to East Asia, India, and Brazil; church concerns and church members; publishing house agents; slavery and the church; and the death of his wife. Photocopies are newsclippings about Wilson and the Methodist Church. The diary (1821-1858) was written by Wilson's father, Norval Wilson, and documents his activities as a circuit rider in the Baltimore, Maryland, and Winchester and Alexandria, Virginia, circuits. Certificates for ordination and a diploma were issued to Norval Wilson and to Alpheus Wilson; a sermon by Wilson is based on biblical text.

The collection consists of the papers of Young John Allen from 1854-1938. The papers include correspondence, writings, material related to his missionary activity in China, printed material, family papers, and photographs. The majority of the papers concern the years Young John Allen served as a missionary in China for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. His correspondence details his relationship with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, his family, and other missionaries. Writings include sermons and unpublished manuscript drafts and concern missionary work, particularly in China. Records of the China missions, including reports, curriculum, financial records, architectural drawings, and minutes detail the day-to-day operations of the missionary schools established by Young John Allen. Printed material includes clippings by and about Young John Allen, pamphlets, published minutes, and circulars, primarily published by organizations affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, its mission board, and the Woman's Missionary Board. Other papers include personal material such as tax assessments, Young John Allen's will, tributes, research materials of Allen's grandson George R. Loehr, Jr., and school papers of the Allen children. The Allen papers also include photographs of the Allen family, missionaries in China and Korea such as Yun Ch'i Ho, and Allen residences and memorials.
