J. B. Priestley, playwright.
J.B. Priestley, playwright; David Mamet, adapter, not credited here.
English author J.B. Priestley had a long and prolific career writing in numerous genres, and achieved critical and popular success in each. After serving in World War II and attending Cambridge, he moved to London and made his name as a literary essayist. He had success as a novelist, playwright, literary critic, historian, and short story writer. His work was fueled by an optimistic view of England, but balanced by a realistic desire for improvement. His novels remain in print, and his plays are frequently revived.
Epithet: novelist, playwright and essayist
The prolific writer, broadcaster and critic J.B. Priestley (1894-1984) is perhaps best known for his "time plays", such as An Inspector Calls and for his best-selling novels, most notably The Good Companions and Angel Pavement . However, his huge output of work also included essays, autobiography, social history, time theory and verse. Priestley also was active in politics, expressing his concerns (for instance about the nuclear arms race) through commentary and campaigning. Born and brought up in Bradford, his works often reflected his Yorkshire background, and his connections with the city were later marked by a public statue and the naming of the J.B. Priestley Library at the University of Bradford. He was married three times: in 1919 to Emily Tempest, who died in 1925, to Jane Wyndham Lewis, and in 1953 to the archeologist and writer Jacquetta Hawkes.
Author and critic.

Pudney, John, 1909-1977. Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
Title:
Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
The John Pudney Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976), include drafts, notes, printer's copies, galleys, research material, notebooks, diaries, and correspondence. Manuscripts for Pudney's poetry collections and chapbooks include Collected Poems, 1957, and Selected Poems, 1967-1973, as well as proofs for Beyond this Disregard (1943), South of Forty (1943), Spandrels: Poems and Ballads (1969), and Living in a One-Sided House (1976). Manuscripts for early and/or unpublished later poems, 1926-1968, are also present. Some materials such as those for Ten Summers: Poems, 1933-1943 include only notes and correspondence. Manuscripts of Pudney's fiction include The Accomplice (1950), Shuffley Wanderers: An Entertainment (1948), and 'Sleadley' (nd). Materials for such works as The Net (1952), Trespass in the Sun (1957), and Home and Away: An Autobiographical Gambit (1960), include only critical notes and correspondence. Nonfiction materials include the proposal and correspondence for The Thomas Cook Story (1953). These materials, which concern the British temperance movement, consist primarily of the mid-19th century letters and ephemera of Thomas Cook, George Cruikshank, and Emily Ellis. Also present are the manuscript for Lewis Carroll and His World (1976), a working notebook, 1947 on the history of the British Air Force, and numerous materials for the revised edition of The Smallest Room (1954, 1959), a humorous history of sanitation and water closets. The Correspondence series, 1937-1962, primarily concerns the revision of The Smallest Room. Other correspondence also describes the nature of Pudney's other literary endeavors and editorial duties, while letters from George Barker and H.E. Bates are of a more personal nature. Other significant correspondents include Kingsley Amis, Malcolm Arnold, John Betjeman, Benjamin Britten, Jocelyn Brooke, Sir Winston Churchill, Cynthia Coville (Secretary to Queen Mary), Oliver Dawney (Secretary to H.M. Queen Elizabeth), C. Day Lewis, T.S. Eliot, John Lehmann, Compton Mackenzie, Wolf Mankowitz, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Laurence Olivier, J.B. Priestly, Frederic Prokosch, Herbert Edward Read, Michael Redgrave, Vita Sackville-West, Edith Sitwell, Stephen Spender, Henry Treece, and Evelyn Waugh.

Goetz, Ruth Goodman. Papers, 1916-1983.
Title:
Papers, 1916-1983.
Papers of Ruth Goodman Goetz (1912-2001), a playwright and screenwriter, together with papers of two members of her theatrical family: her father, Philip Goodman (1885-1940), who was a producer of Broadway plays and musicals, and her husband and collaborator, Augustus Goetz (1889-1957). Also present are papers of agent Leah Salisbury pertaining to her management of Goetz's literary interests. Philip Goodman's papers include correspondence, contracts, agreements, financial records, and typescript copies of plays produced or written by Goodman. The work of Ruth Goodman and Augustus Goetz includes scripts, correspondence, and financial records for stage and screen plays such as "Carrie" (Para., 1952), "The Immoralist" (1954), "The Hidden River" (1957), and "One Man Show" (1945). "The Heiress," for which the Goetzes adapted both the stage (1947) and screen (Para., 1949) versions is partially documented, although scripts for neither are present. Prominent correspondents represented in the papers include Brooks Atkinson, Frith Banbury, James M. Cain, Constance Cummings, W. C. Fields, Andre Gide, Alan F. Guttmacher, Oscar Hammerstein II, George S. Kaufman, Jerome Kern, Eli Landau, Irving Paul Lazar, Sinclair Lewis, Don Marquis, Raymond Pearl, J. B. Priestley, Elmer Rice, Billy Rose, Robert E. Sherwood, and William Wyler. A large part of the correspondence is letters exchanged between Mrs. Goetz and her daughter over a thirty year period. Also part of the collection is a typescript journal of a trip made to China in 1978; references to associations with Clifford Odets, S. J. Perelman, and David Selznick; undated costume plates; and production designs and stills from "The Heiress."

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
Title:
Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.

Papers regarding the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, 1917-1960
Title:
Papers regarding the Birmingham Repertory Theatre 1917-1960
The Birmingham Repertory Theatre of Birmingham, England, was founded on February 15, 1913, by Sir Barry Jackson (1879-1961), who was knighted in 1925 for services to theater. From the beginning, the Theatre's repertoire was extraordinarily wide, including Greek drama, medieval morality plays, Shakespeare in both traditional costume and modern dress, farce comedy and experimental works. A new building was designed and constructed in the 1970s. Consists of photocopied correspondence to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, much of it addressed to theatre administrator Cyril Phillips, the bulk of it concerning the Theatre's 25th anniversary celebration in 1938. A number of letters from George Bernard Shaw, all dated 1923, concern an imminent production of his play BACK TO METHUSELAH. There is also a photostat of a contract with Shaw, dated 1917, granting production rights to several of his plays. Other correspondents include J. B. Priestley, Peggy Ashcroft, Errol Flynn, Robert Donat, Stanley Lupino, Brian Ahern, and Somerset Maugham.

Title:
Herbert M. Prentice papers 1925-1960
The collection is almost entirely bound promptbooks, annotated with notes and cues by Prentice, for the plays he produced. The extensive handwritten staging directions as well as many loose lighting and property plots, cast lists and set design diagrams provide substantial documentation of these productions of the regional British theater in this period (1920s-1950s). There are also some autobiographical writings, notes and drafts for speeches he gave, a small amount of correspondence, mostly with playwrights, photographs from unidentified productions and some photographs of Prentice with colleagues.

Title:
Frank N. Pilling papers, 1923-1984.
Collection of Hopkins alumnus and naval officer, Frank N. Pilling, consists largely of his personal writings, some in typescript and some in published form. Other items include correspondence, photographs, genealogical records, and documents and notes from his service in London during World War II. Of interest is Pilling's manuscript entitled "The Battle of Grosvenor Square," a poignant account of life in London during emergency conditions. Pilling described his dramatic rescue at sea, his efforts to find common interests between British and American service people, dinner-discussion groups with prominent British writers and politician, and visits to villages and sites outside the city. Included too is a selection of correspondence between Pilling and the skipper who rescued hin at sea, Albert Hocken. The two men shared their views on world events during the period 1951-1981. Final items are bound volumes of many of Pilling's essays and observations and a notebook of aphorisms.

The Letters series consists almost entirely of 577 letters from Nash to his wife, Frances Leonard Nash. Additionally, there are letters to publishers, friends, and in-laws. The Recipient series is composed of letters and telegrams from friends, fans, editors, and publishers to Nash. These include Larry Adler, Spiro Agnew, Nicolas Bentley, Gelett Burgess, Curtis Brown, Ltd., Walt Disney, Corey Ford, Eugene McCarthy, Groucho Marx, Marianne Moore, Christopher Morley, the New Yorker, Charles G.
