Title: James Sloan reminiscences, 1842-1865.

Reminiscences, several in the form of letters to Samuel Wilkeson, L.K. Haddock, and Charles D. Norton, of his early life on the Niagara Frontier. Includes an account of Gen. Bishop's attack on Black Rock during the summer of 1813, boating on the Niagara River and Lake Erie, and Lake Erie tides. Two letters were written to Sloan by Robert Orr of Kittanning, Pa. These contain some history of Kittanning and include notations by Sloan.

Letter from Myron Holley, Utica, 13 Apr. 1821, concerning Bird's purchase of "the instrument" from Benjamin Wright, an Erie Canal engineer; letter, Washington, to Absalom Bull, Black Rock, 21 Apr. 1841, regarding political maneuvering during the Tyler administration, specifically a plan to remove [George W.?] Clinton from office, apparently related to Bird's Buffalo and Niagara Falls Railroad; letter, Black Rock, 25 Feb. 1865, to Charles D. Norton, regarding Bird's "recollections of conversations with those men likely to know the facts" surrounding the sortie from Fort Erie, 17 Sept. 1814; and a brief autobiography, written in 1874. Also includes three papers written by Bird, one on the origin of the name "Black Rock", 1863; the second on early transportation between Albany and Buffalo, 1866, and the third on early charters and boundaries of New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, 1883.
