Summary: Collection consists of original documents, translations, and photostats primarily concerning people and events in Mexico and New Mexico, 1612-1912. Documents on New Mexico include a 1681 journal of Antonio de Otermin relating to the Pueblo Revolt of 1680; a photostat of a 1710 royal decree by the Duke of Alburquerque suppressing a bible printed in London; and the report of a 1749 investigation by Governor Tomas Velez de Cachupin regarding French incursions into Taos, New Mexico. English translations accompany both the Otermin journal and the Cachupin report. Documents on Mexico include royal cedulas (decrees), correspondence, affidavits, appointments, promotions, military orders, accounts of the Valenciana mines (1827, 1836), and a newspaper issue (1865) containing, among other things, military hospital laws promulgated by Emperor Maximillian. Many of these materials are by or about people who participated in the struggle for Mexican independence and were present at key events in Guanajuato and nearby places such as Queretaro. Among these individuals are Agustin de Iturbide, Blas Magana, Miguel Miramon, Jose Montesinos, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, and Guadalupe Victoria. Also within the collection is an undated lithograph of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe.

Aubert, François, 1829-1906. Photographs documenting Emperor Maximilian of Mexico.

Title: Photographs documenting Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. ca. 1866-ca. 1867.

Documenting the end of Maximilian's reign in 1867, the collection contains views of the neighborhood of St. Sébastien, and other streets in Querétaro that were damaged by battle, the Gran Teatro de Iturbide where Maximilian's tribunal court was held, a view of Quert́aro from the Cerro de las Campanas, the hill where Maximilian and his two generals Mejía and Miramón were executed, and their makeshift memorials on the hill. Images of Maximilian's body in an open coffin include a full-length view, a three-quarter view, and an uncut sheet of carte-de-visite head shots. There are also photographs of the shirt and other clothing he was wearing when executed. Also included are a group portrait of his supporters and court officials gathered in Querétaro and another of men associated with his court, and a map showing the military operations of the Republican army in Querétaro.

Collection consists of documents, letters, and visual materials related to Emperor Maximilian, Empress Carlota, and the people associated with them in the European intervention in Mexico, 1861-1867. Printed and holographic imperial appointments and awards are signed by Maximilian, from 1864 to 1866. Other documents include letters and papers of Maximilian, Carlota, President Benito Juárez, and physicians Alvisio Miskey and Francisco Archer. Diaries and memoirs by others relate personal insights about the court and the political revolutions of the time. A diary by Charles Whitehead, mine owner and Mexico City resident, spans the years 1853 to 1865; an undated memoir "Les derniers jours de contre guerilla au Mexique" is by Jules de Rafelis-Saint-Sauveur; and a mimeographed copy of "My recollections of Maximilian" was written by Maria de la Fere, ca.1907. Printed documents include magazine and newspaper articles from Mexico, the U.S., and Europe, from 1867 to the centennial remembrance in 1967 of Maximilian's death. Broadsides, decrees by officials such as the interim Governor Rafael J. García, campaign notices, and proclamations about the war encompass the period 1855-1867. An 1895 protest, signed by 126 students, concerns the traitor Leonard Marques being allowed to remain in Mexico. Among the visual materials are cartes-de-visite photographs, photographic postcards, and photogravure depictions of many civil and military individuals. Ephemera include color stills from the 1939 Warner Brothers movie "Juarez." Other items are drawings by H.D. Nichols from photographs, color prints of Mexican locations of historic interest, and a composite photo of the scene before Maximilian and two of his generals, Miguel Miramon and Tomas Mejia, were executed.

Correspondence, typescripts, and assorted documents relating to the reform movement, War of the Reform and French intervention in Mexico in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The bulk of the correspondence, dated 1851-1883, includes letters from Benito Juárez, Juan Álvarez, Ezequiel Montes, Ignacio Zaragoza, Leonardo Márquez, Manuel Doblado, Antonio Balbuena, Joaquín M. Degollado, and other persons from opposing factions of the conflicts. A letter dated 1907 to Genaro García relays a copy of a letter from Juan B. Duarte concerning his experiences in the war against the French intervention in Zacatecas in late 1866 and early 1867. Typescripts include copies of correspondence of Manuel Doblado, Porfirio Díaz, José María Arteaga, and others; two reports by Achille François Bazaine dated 1865 and their translations from French to Spanish; a report on the death of Pedro Moreno of the Francisco Javier Mina expedition and the location of his remains; a diary of Miguel Miramón from March 17 to April 1, 1859, concerning military events in Veracruz; newspaper articles; hospital reports on war injuries with lists of patients; and a manuscript by León Guzmán entitled "El Partido constitucional : la, 2a y 3a época del Presidente D. Benito Juárez." Assorted documents include research notes about and a newspaper clipping by Porfirio Díaz; a diary of a journey from New York to Europe in 1859; military orders; a report in English and its Spanish translation about the imprisonment of Emperor Maximilian; a rough draft of an official document from the office of the French commandant en chef in Mexico; and a patriotic poem.
