A complete copy of family records kept by Joshua Harris, including a list of family marriages, 1830-1858, and deaths, 1832-1858, with ages. Also, correspondence of Miss Clara C. Harris of Concord, N.C., with scattered members of the Harris, Hampton, Shelby and related families, chiefly of Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties, N.C., about genealogy; and genealogical correspondence, 1909-1923, and data and scattered family papers of the Reverend John Abner Harris of western North Carolina, concerning the Harris, McLelland, Morrison, and Stevenson families of Iredell County, N.C., and the Harris family in Indiana and Pennsylvania. Also included is scattered personal correspondence, 1850-1856, of female family members and their friends living near Concord, N.C., including a letter, 1854, from a student at Edgeworth Seminary, Greensboro, N.C., discussing school life.

Title: C. Clay Dillard papers, 1856-1863.

Chiefly C. Clay Dillard's journal entries detailing her personal life, 1856-1863. Dillard started the journal during her last year at Edgeworth Female Seminary. In that year, she discussed her classes, friends, and teachers. After graduation, she chronicled her travels throughout the South, including stops in Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Saint Louis, Mo., and visits to her sister and brother-in-law's plantation. Throughout the journal, Dillard discussed the tragedies of her life in terms of her Christian beliefs. The main focus of the journal is Dillard's romance with William Lafayette Scott, her teacher at Edgeworth. She often wrote of her feelings towards him even after the relationship was terminated by family members who considered him to be of inferior social status. Also included are a letter from William L. Scott to one of his cousins discussing the romance; a picture of the plantation Dillard's father bought in Tennessee; a printed poem attributed to Dillard, and a newspaper clipping about one of Dillard's relatives during the Spanish American War in Cuba.

Chiefly of family and personal correspondence of Drury Lacy, Presbyterian minister, educator, and army chaplain; and of his daughter, Bessie Dewey, leader in social and cultural activities in Charlotte, N.C.; and of other members of the Lacy family and the Dewey family. Included are letters from relatives and friends in Prince Edward County, Va., Raleigh, N.C., New Bern, N.C., Charlotte, N.C., and other North Carolina towns; letters written at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia; Presbyterian General Assembly at Philadelphia, Pa., in 1839 and 1842; Edgeworth Female Seminary in Greensboro, N.C., 1845-1848, 1851; a boys' school at Hillsborough, N.C., 1847-1848; and Davidson College. There are also Civil War letters from civilians in Raleigh, N.C., Warrenton, N.C., and Richmond, Va.; Confederate soldier letters from North Carolina and Virginia; and Confederate chaplains' letters written at Richmond, Va., Petersburg, Va., and Wilson, N.C. Letters of the Reconstruction period are chiefly about life in Raleigh, N.C., and Wilmington, N.C. Also included are letters, 1872-1878, from Peace Institute in Raleigh, N.C. Letters of the 1880s and 1890s are mostly from Charlotte, N.C., Morganton, N.C., and Lincolnton, N.C., and include observations on the Presbyterian General Assembly in Charlotte, 1897. Correspondence, spanning nearly 80 years, concerns daily home life and social life; Presbyterian Church matters; education of children; and comments on reading, national issues, and local events. Papers of the 1950s and 1960s belonged to Elisabeth Chambers Holt and address Charlotte, N.C., banking history and her ownership of the Lacy and Dewey family papers. Also included are miscellaneous papers consisting of receipts, songs and poems, essays, orations, compositions, and obituary clippings. Volumes include sermons, notes, and lectures of Drury Lacy; records of literary organizations and musical organizations in Charlotte, N.C.; and teaching notes of Bessie Dewey.

The collection is primarily military papers of John A. Ramsay, including official correspondence, muster rolls, ordnance and quartermaster returns, orders, reports, and a variety of other military records, and Ramsay's postwar correspondence about the history of the unit. Also included is antebellum correspondence of Margaret L. Beall, later Mrs. John A. Ramsay, of Salisbury, N.C., from family and friends, mostly in Rowan County, Iredell County, and Davie County, N.C., including letters received while she was student at Edgeworth Female Seminary, Greensboro, N.C. The letters discuss social and family news. Margaret married first Julius D. Ramsay (died 1864), John's cousin. Letters between Julius and John show that Julius managed John's business affairs in Salisbury while the latter was serving in the army, and assisted him in obtaining supplies for his regiment.

There is little correspondence.
