French author.
Julien Viaud, who would later assume the pseudonym of Pierre Loti, was born born January 14, 1850 in Rochefort, France. Because of family financial and legal problems, Loti was allowed to follow in his late older brother's footsteps and enroll in the naval academy at Brest in 1867. During his time as a naval officer, Loti traveled widely and gathered material for his future novels in such places as Tahiti, Turkey, Senegal, and Japan. His first novel, Aziyadé was published in 1879, and was followed by many many other works. Loti was inducted into the Académie française in 1892. His naval career was of great importance to him, and he reached the rank of captain before being placed on the reserve list in 1910, though he returned to volunteer throughout the First World War. Loti died 1923 at Hendaye, in the Basque country, one of his most beloved places.

Century Company records
Title:
Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Frederick R. Koch collection, 1640-1983
Title:
Frederick R. Koch collection, 1640-1983.
The Frederick R. Koch Collection consists of musical, literary, and historical materials collected by Frederick R. Koch, principally through purchases at public auctions, 1979-1986. Including individual items, concentrations of related materials, and several extensive archives, the collection is a broad and deep resource for study of the lives and works of a range of composers, authors, and other historical figures. Most materials are music manuscripts, literary manuscripts, drawings, and correspondence of European, English, and American composers, authors, and artists. Also present are historical manuscripts, photographs, albums, and other papers. While the contents of the collection span the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, most date from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, with particular strengths in French, Italian, German, and British music, French literature, and British art.

Autograph letter signed, dated : on board the López y López [in the Mediterranean Sea], 9-14 December 1907, to an unidentified recipient, 1907 Dec. 9-14.
Describing at length his life on board the ship--weather, food, fellow passengers, crew--, saying that it is curious how women, who endure so many things--men, childbirth, nudity, the corset--endure the sea with difficulty (except for the English, who are néréides, whose element is water), saying that they were greeted in Genoa by bad weather, that he missed seeing Stromboli (he doesn't think he missed much) and the Strait of Messina but in return had a good view of Etna from base to summit, that Crete was obscured by clouds, noting that the ship's library has only books in Spanish, which forces him to strive to understand them--he is making progress in the language of Don Quixote and Alfonso XIII, and finds great benefit in penetrating, however little, a foreign literature--, complaining that, signs to the contrary notwithstanding, there is no life belt (ceinture de liège) in his cabin, saying that if he were Pierre Loti he would paint the sea, the clouds, the wind, and would inspire the recipient with interest in it all, mentioning the two sonatas op. 14 [by Beethoven], saying that at the concert on the 6th he may play his Africa [op. 89] in the first part (the sonata goes better afterwards), deploring the killing of sperm whales, adding that for the first time in his life he is keeping a journal de bord--he wanted to do for the recipient what he has never done for anyone else--, that he was often asked why he never wrote about his travels and explaining that he has never done so "parcequ'il n'y a pas de genre plus ingrat," etc., etc.
