Richard Varick, born in New Jersey, 1753, served as Captain, deputy muster-master-general, and George Washington's secretary during the Revolutionary war. He was appointed one of the first mayors of New York and served from 1789-1801. He died in 1831. Papers, 1774-1830, the majority dating from the Revolutionary War. They include letters received, drafts of letters sent, acounts, receipts, military orders, inventories, muster and pay rolls, military pay accounts, indentures, court-martial papers and civil court papers. They deal with: Varick's command of a company in Alexander McDougall's battalion at Ticonderoga and in Canada during 1775; service on courts-martial in 1775; problems of the batteau service in northern New York State in 1776; his position as secretary to Gen. Philip Schuyler in 1775-1776; his work as deputy muster master general, inspector general at West Point, first aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold (including papers about Arnold's defection and subsequent investigations), and as recording secretary for George Washington (including papers about the transcription of Washington's letters). Many pertain to suits handled by him as an attorney practising in Poughkeepsie in 1782-1783, and in New York City after the war. The remainder include: papers about veterans' claims to military lands in New York State, including some maps; letters from various French persons, ca. 1780 to ca. 1800; papers relating to the settlement of the estate of Derick Dey, Varick's maternal grandfather, and the affairs of other members of the Dey family; personal and family correspondence and accounts; a few documents signed by Varick in his capacity as mayor of New York. Some of his more frequent correspondents were: Lt. Daniel Gano, Cornelius Cuyler, Philip John Schuyler, Gen. Horatio Gates, Col. Joseph Ward, Col. This series consists of photographs that document the Attorneys General of the United States. Attorneys General are documented through photographic copies of paintings and photographic portraits. In addition, some of the images show various activities of the Attorneys General, including press conferences, meetings, oaths of office, and banquets. Many of the photographs were used as part of a commemorative book, "200th Anniversary of the Office of the Attorney General", which highlights the history of the Office of Attorney General and the celebration of the anniversary on September 22, 1989. A copy of this book is included in this series in addition to another Department of Justice book,"Attorneys General of the United States, 1798-1985", which used many of the photographs. Not every Attorney General from the time period of the series is represented. A few images contain multiple Attorney Generals.

The Bradford family papers span 1620 to 1906 with the bulk of material created during the American Revolution. Many family members have contributed correspondence, notes and documents to the collection. The three most prominent contributions come from William Bradford (1721-1791), Thomas Bradford (1745-1838) and Thomas Bradford (1781-1857). The collection contains of military documents including certificates, accounts and correspondence. These documents most frequently pertain to prisoners of war during the American Revolution in both the army and navy. Correspondence, account books and subscription lists from the Bradford printing and publishing business are also found among the family papers as are personal correspondence.

The first volume includes extracts from the journals of Conrad Weiser and Christian Frederick Post (1757), Charles Thomson's "An Enquiry into the causes of the alienation of the Delaware and Shawanese Indians from the British interest" (1759), and a printed version of Judge Bradford's "Statement of facts and observations respecting the penal laws" (1792). The second volume contains selected letters and documents in the Pennsylvania state records on Indian relations, including transcriptions of several treaties between the Province of Pennsylvania and the Delawares and other Indians (1755-1758); the French and Indian War; and Braddock's campaign. Some manuscripts are written by Deborah Norris Logan and Charles Thomson.
