Correspondence primarily with lawyers and judges concerns specific cases, including those on the circuit court as part of his regular duties; matters of jurisprudence, in particular admiralty, banking, maritime, and bankruptcy law; and his extensive publishing including his "Commentaries" series as a teaching tool. Correspondence also concerns requests for recommendations, politics, including potential changes in the size of the court, and the Harvard Law School. Correspondents include Edward Everett, James Kent, John Marshall, Charles Sumner, Daniel Webster, Bushrod Washington, John H. Ashmun, William W. Story, David Hoffman, and John Pitman.
