Manuscript notebook in a single hand containing two works. The first 101 pages contain extracts in Latin from a text on logic, headed "Logica institutio compendiosa maximam partem, ex Heereboordi erm eneia logica desumpta." These are presumably from Adrianus Heereboord's Hermineia Logica. The second section of the volume contains "Dr. Merryweathers directions to a young student in the university." This text outlines a four year course of study at the university, gives detailed advice on how to read, take notes, and construct commonplace books, as well as general advice on studious conduct, religious practices, and gentlemanly behavior. There is also a list of works noted as being read by "such young gentlemen as come to university rather for breeding than for scholarship:" these include Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, Sandys' Travels, Herbert's and Crashaw's poems, More's Utopia, Camden's Remains, and Bacon's Natural History.

Meeke, Robert. [Notebook of theological writing].

Late 17th century volume possibly composed by future Church of England minister, Robert Meeke, while attending Richard Frankland's academy. Meeke's ex libris inscriptions are in the same hand as the majority of the text and the contents of the volume are in line with the curriculum taught by Frankland. In addition to several copies of letters on theological issues probably written by Frankland (some of them are signed "R.F."), the volume contains items on theology, philosophy and the works of Adrian Heereboord. Though John Downes connection to Meeke is unclear, there was a Samuel Leech who also attended Frankland's academy and who is also mentioned in Meeke's diaries, published in 1874.
