Correspondence written in 1802 to James Backus, in Norwich, Conn. includes a letter of Jan. 9 from Geo. Sheffield in reply to a request for a ship-builder to go to Marietta, Ohio; a letter of Feb. 2 from Thos. Lloyd regarding Mr. Sheffield's price for carpentry work; and a letter of July 6 from [Elijah?] Backus in Marietta seeking a place in the James Milhouse family or elsewhere for his little girl to "have advantage of society and a dancing school."

The papers are composed of correspondence, legal and financial papers, and memorabilia of several descendants and relatives of Samuel (1693-1740) and Elizabeth Tracey Backus of Norwich, Connecticut. Papers of Samuel Backus's grandson James, his partner Rufus Backus, and James's brother-in-law Dudley Woodbridge concern mercantile establishments, commerce, and shipping in Norwich following the Revolutionary War. There is also correspondence between several family members of this generation as well as a diary of James's brother Elijah, which he kept while studying in New Haven (1778). Papers of James's son William Woodbridge Backus document his investments and financial dealings, genealogical interests, and philantrhopic endeavors for the last fifteen years of his life.

Also the correspondence of Justice of the Peace Isaac Huntington and James Backus, and correspondence of the Backus and Reynolds families. Of particular note are the 1730 tax list, and the iron account of Elijah Backus, 1758, in the Backus correspondence folder. Isaac Huntington's name appears in most if not all of these records.
