Papers of Stillman include over 100 items pertaining to the business enterprises of his father, Charles Stillman of Brownsville, Texas, who was engaged in shipping and trade, real estate, and railroad investment. A large portion of the collection documents of James Stillman's activities in banking, in railroad financing, and in other of his business and industrial interests. The letters, legal documents, and miscellaneous papers are representative of the entire span of his career. Included in the correspondence are letters from many prominent financiers and industrialists of his day, including many from William Rockefeller; letters from President Grover Cleveland, some personal in nature and some concerned with business transactions; nine letter books of James Stillman, covering the years 1886-1897, 1906-1918; letter books of his secretary Miss K. Bredin, 1908-1916; journals for the years 1889, 1891, 1898, 1899; bank book recording Stillman's drafts, 1911-1914, on the London firm of Baring Brothers; four diaries, 1881-1884; six notebooks; one cash and journal and one ledger, 1868-1871. 1991 Addition: 2 vols. of typescript copies of business letters, 1867-1879; 1 vol. of photostats of obituary clippings, 1918; & 1 vol. scrapbook of book reviews & letters re. The collection includes a set of 392 letterbooks, 1877-1918, with letters written by or for Mr. Rockefeller. There are two volumes from the firm of Rockefeller, Andrews and Flagler, 1867-1868. There are two chronological groups of correspondence, 1879-1894 and 1918-1937. The collection also contains Mr. Rockefeller's personal ledgers and journals, 1855-1937, his subsidiary books of account, and several sets of expense vouchers, 1893-1918. There is a set of 288 scrapbooks, 1904-1930, which include press coverage of the Rockefeller Family. The Inglis series concerns conversations between Mr. Rockefeller and William O. Inglis in preparation for a biography which was never published.

Records of the first Director of the Park, William T. Hornaday (1854-1937), from 1896 until 1926, and W. Reid Blair (1875-1949), who served as Veterinarian from 1902 to 1922, Assistant Director from 1922 to 1926, and Director from 1926 to 1940. These records consist of incoming correspondence and carbon copies or drafts of outgoing correspondence, staff memoranda, reports, and working papers reflecting planning, policies, and day-to-day operations. These recovers cover planning, construction, opening and improving zoological exhibits; the acquisition, shipment, and acclimation of animal collections; veterinary matters; queries from zoologists, zoo visitors, and the general public; public relations; relations with the City of New York concerning transportation facilities and funding; and other aspects of park management. Correspondents include J.A. Allen, F.B. Alexander, M.R. Audubon, John W. Morgan Estate, in a 1915-18 lawsuit brought in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against William Rockefeller, the Executors of the J. P. Morgan Estate, and the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company for "conspiracy to monopolize" railroad, streetcar, and water transportation of the "common-carrier business of transporting passengers and property" in New York, New Jersey, and New England.

The records consist of transcripts of a series of interviews conducted between 1917 and 1920 by William O. Inglis, a reporter for the New York WORLD. The interviews were granted for the purpose of producing an officially-sanctioned biography of Rockefeller, but Inglis was unable to produce a publishable manuscript.

Title: Writ of Inquiry, 1786 May 6.

A writ ordering the sheriff of the City and County of Albany to inquire into the costs incurred by William Rockefeller in providing "meat, drink and lodging" to Henry I. Van Rensselaer, Caspar Huyck, Jeremiah Muller, and twelve other men. The men apparently obtained the goods and services listed above from Rockefeller and refused to pay for them. Rockefeller requested the court pass a judgement against the men for the past due amount. The sheriff was ordered to ascertain the amount for the court's judgement.

The bulk of these records consists of architectural drawings, plans and details of greenhouses and conservatories including some plans of their heating systems, 1881-1954. Drawings of related structures include solariums, aviaries, studios for artists and film makers, sewerage system sludge beds, and some landscape designs are included. The company's major clients were estate owners in the lower Hudson River Valley and included Jay Gould, but clients were also located in many states and some foreign countries. Included are the New York Botanical Garden, Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the Palm House at Kew Gardens (England), and the conservatory at Belle Isle, Detroit. Business records include correspondence, 1881-1928 (incomplete), daybooks, journals, cashbooks, sales ledgers, time books pay books, purchase ledgers, ca. 1881-1930, and greenhouse and conservatory advertising illustrations, ca. 1913-1954.
