Spaulding's papers consist of his diary and drafts of 5 letters. The Civil War portion of Spaulding's diary gives a detailed account of his daily routine as a soldier detailed to the Commissary Dept. He describes life at Camp Lincoln, Mass.; on board ship to North Carolina; battles at Roanoke Island, New Bern, Whitehall, Goldsboro, Deep Gulley, Gum Swamp; guard, picket and outpost duty; voyage to Newport News; duty around Portsmouth and Yorktown, Va.; occupation of Bermuda Hundred; battles at Walthall and Chester Station; Cold Harbor where he was wounded; recuperation at Harewood Hospital at Corcoran's Farm, Satterlee Hospital, Philadelphia, Post Hospital at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa., and General Hospital, York, Pa; and mustering out and resumption of civilian life. In addition to military engagements the diary contains considerable religious sentiment and descriptions of the weather, food, health and medicine, quarters, drills, marches, skirmishes, books read, religious services attended, leisure activities, officers, looting, furloughs home, hospital life, second hand war news, and news of his girlfriend Mary Burnap. There are very brief mentions of Generals John G. Foster, Charles A. Heckman, Innis N. Palmer, and Ambrose Burnside, (generally regarding reviews of the troops), John A. Andrew, contrabands, the Merrimack, Confederate prisoners, a baseball game to determine guard duty (2/14/63), work of the Christian Commission, and Jubal Early's Washington Raid.
