The collection, which is remarkably complete, includes general account books, production records, sales records, payrolls, and letters. The records which have proved to be of the greatest interest are the letterbooks, especially the treasurers' letters, the sales records, semiannual reports to the directors, and the payrolls. Information also appears in the records for the Suffolk and Tremont Mills, which were controlled by the Lawrence Manufacturing Company. Townsend and Yale (later E.M. Townsend and Company) were the selling agents. Treasurers' letters include those of Henry Hall, Henry V. Ward, T. Jefferson Coolidge, L.M. Sargent, and C.P. Baker. Agents' letters include William Austin, William S. Southworth, William F. Salmon, Daniel Hussey, John Kilburn, Franklin Nourse, E.H. Walker.

Account book, 1811-1827, by John Sturgis, probably located in Brant County, Ontario, Canada, with personal and Justice of Peace records which include marriages in Monroe County, Michigan, 1821-1827. Land patents for Oklahoma and St. Joseph County, Michigan. Records of Sturgis Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan, include poll book of general election, 1989; list of mortgages owned in Sturgis Township, 1912; minutes of the Sturgis Township board meetings, 1912-1916.

Most letters discuss family and personal matters but five relate to textiles; includes a notice of Lancaster Mills concerning new stock, with a letter on the reverse to John Aiken commenting on this issue.

These are incomplete records of two early Lowell cotton mills, started in 1831, joined in 1871, and finally absorbed by the Nashua Manufacturing Company in 1926. The collection is fairly strong for the early period, and there are several series of letters. The papers relating to sales in China (1905-1910) and to relations with the Locks and Canals Company (1878-1886) are of particular interest. Includes treasurers' letters of Henry Hall, Henry V. Ward, Walter Hastings, William A. Burke, J.C. Ayer, J.C. Birdseye, A.S. Covel, and Charles F. Young, and agents' letters of Israel Whitney, John Aiken, Charles L. Tilden, Charles F. Battles, John Wright, Thomas S. Shaw, E.W. Thomas, and J.J. Connell.
