These papers consist chiefly of correspondence related to Charles Anthony's long and varied career in business, law, government, and politics. Frequent correspondents included William Collins, James Doty, John Fine, Asa Hamilton, and Bishop Perkins. The papers also includes bills and receipts for goods and services rendered to Anthony; printed circulars related to state and local elections; annotated copy of proposed bill of the New York Sate Assembly for improving navigation on the Oswegatchie River, 1853; certificates of appointment of Charles Anthony as postmaster at Gouverneur; an array of documents related to litigation and court cases; and records related to his position as postmaster at Gouverneur from 1853 to 1855.

Letter written at Gouverneur, N.Y. to Anthony's brother-in-law James M. Smith in Buffalo, N.Y. discussing the lumber business in which Anthony and Smith seem to have been partners. On the same sheet is a letter written by Louisa Smith Anthony in regards to personal and family matters.
