Rules

Richard Leake (1733-1802) was born in Cork, Ireland. He was a surgeon in both the East and West Indies. He came to America and settled in New Jersey, moving first to North Carolina and then to Georgia in 1774. A Loyalist, Leake left Georgia during the Revolutionary War, but returned after the war and resumed his life as a planter. In 1784 he bought Jekyll Island, selling the island soon after its purchase. In 1785 he bought a plantation on the Little Ogeechee River in Chatham County; he sold the plantation in 1791. In 1792 he moved to Bellville plantation in McIntosh County. He first rented this plantation before purchasing it. He also had plantations at Sapelo on Main, McIntosh County, on St. Simons Island, and on the Turtle River, both in Glynn County. His daughter, Sarah, married Thomas Spalding of Sapelo Island. In addition to planting, Leake operated a store in which he sold cotton, cotton seed, staples, articles of clothing, piece goods, wines and liquors, and meats.

Papers relating to the legal dispute of claims to the land holdings in New York City, New Jersey, Florida, and England of John George Leake (1752-1827) who died intestate in New York. Among the claimants was Sarah Leake Spalding of Georgia. Papers include notes, memorials, interrogatories, genealogies, and other evidence supporting various claims; correspondence of lawyers in Scotland, New York, and New Jersey; and other material relating to the claims pressed by collateral descendants for over 70 years. Also included are about 90 items--business correspondence, bills, and receipts, chiefly 1790s, some relating to slaves--of Sarah Leake Spalding's father, Richard Leake (d. 1802) of St. Simons and Darien, Ga., and her husband, Thomas Spalding (1774-1851) of Savannah and Sapelo Island, Ga., cotton planters.

This collection consists of a journal kept by Richard Leake, 1785-1802, which is a combination of plantation journal and store accounts. It also has copies of his tax returns. It contains information on planting Sea Island cotton and other crops, commodity prices, raising and marketing cattle, working and hiring-out of slaves. There are comments on the weather. This journal is a negative photocopy of the original in the collection of the Colonial Dames of America, Georgia Society, deposited at the Georgia Historical Society.
