Twenty-five holograph manuscripts of poems by Beverly Chew. Material concerning printing of Chew's Essays & verses about books (1926) includes three ALS from Daniel Berkeley Updike to Grolier Club librarian Ruth Shepard Grannis. Also one copy of The wish by Walter Pope with a preface by Chew and letter to him from Frank E. Hopkins, proprietor of the Marion Press. Chew's correspondents included, among others: Charles Dexter Allen, Samuel Putnam Avery, John Kendrick Bangs, H. C. Bunner, Theodore Low De Vinne, Bishop Arthur Cleveland Coxe, Samuel Albert Edwards, Clyde Fitch, Edwin Davis French, Ruth Shepard Grannis, Charles Swift Riche Hildeburn, Robert Hoe, Jr. and John LaFarge. Also: W. J. Linton, Brander Matthews, Sir William Osler, James R. Osgood, Rudolph Ruzicka, Anrew Fleming West, George Woodbury and John Henry Wrenn. Photograph of memorial resolution by Walter S. Gilliss and a New York Times obituary notice of 22 May 1924 that includes a description of Chew's library. Also six photographs of Chew's retirement home in Geneva, New York.

Items printed for the Grolier Club, including invitations and exhibit announcements. Also printed material sent to Gilliss. Some Grolier Club correspondence and a duplicate set of annual meeting minutes (1906-1910), including lists of candidates for seats on the Club council in 1909. A small amount of personal material includes Christmas cards and photographs, including one of Gilliss with a group of employees from Doubleday gathered around a sundial he designed for the home of Frank Nelson Doubleday in Garden City, New York.

Title: Records, [ca. 1902-1958].

Included are correspondence files, 1909-1958, concerning publications of the club, exhibits, elections of officers, general club business, and the liquidation of the club, 1955-1957. Much of this is directed to the secretaries, John Cotton Dana and Wilbur Macey Stone. A small amount of correspondence and printed material concerns another book club, the Stowaways, of which Stone was also a member. Also included are typescripts and galley proofs of books and essays published by the club, and printed material including registers of officers and members, 1926-1934; ballots; exhibit catalogs, 1909 and 1920; programs for dinners and exhibits; club handbooks, 1920; charter and bylaws, published in 1931; and some clippings. Also: minutes, 1908-1946, and a scrapbook, 1902-1913, containing meeting notices; programs, dues notices, and other examples of printed material produced by the club and circulated to members; clippings, and correspondence. Early correspondence in the scrapbook documents the formation of the club. Of note is a file (ca. 1942-1944) of material gathered during the preparation of a memorial volume dedicated to William Macey Stone which includes biographical notes and essays, printed material, bibliographies of his work, and a holograph tribute by Frederic W. Goudy.

Title: I.N. Phelps Stokes papers 1909-1944

Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867-1944) was an American architect and housing reformer. John Mead Howells and Stokes worked as partners in the architectural firm Howells and Stokes. In addition to his architectural work, Stokes was an organizer of the Tenement House Committee of the Charity Organization Society, served on the New York State Tenement House Commission, helped write the New York tenement house law of 1901, and designed several model tenements. He had a renowned collection of prints of old New York and was responsible for The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909, a six-volume pictorial history published between 1915 and 1928. He served on the Board of Trustees of the New York Public Library from 1916 until 1938. Collection consists of correspondence and research notes, drafts and proofs, photographs, and other materials for the Iconography of Manhattan Island. Correspondence, 1909-1928, is with booksellers, print dealers, librarians, collectors, and scholars regarding the purchase, exchange and copying of prints and maps of New York, research in New York history, and the preparation of the Iconography. Correspondence for 1925-1929 concerns Stokes's attempts to sell his print collection; while that for 1930-1933 documents the further development of the collection, its donation to the New York Public Library, and the creation and sale of the catalog of the collection. Materials used in the preparation of the Iconography include research notes, transcriptions and photostats of source materials, photographs of illustrations, drafts, and page proofs. Also, unsigned typescript of an article about New York City Hall.

Correspondence, notices, and some reports of librarians Richard Hoe Lawrence, Henry Watson Kent (1900-1905), Ruth Shepard Granniss (1905-1944), George Leslie McKay (1944-1958), Alexander Davidson (1958-1960), J. Terry Bender (1961-1964), Gabriel Austin (1964-1969), and Harvey Simmonds (1969-1970). In addition to correspondence, there are orders and invoices relating to books and bookbinding ordered for the Club for the period. Records for some groups of years appear incomplete. Between 1906 and 1916, Ruth Granniss sent out handwritten correspondence using a carbon-like paper to obtain copies; some of these are now difficult to read. The Granniss files of correspondents' letters include a few of her holograph originals.
