Early life; conversion to Mormonism of his father's family in 1835; spiritual manifestations; removal of his family to Far West, Missouri, 1836; descriptions of Missouri; difficulty with anti-Mormon mobs; expulsion of the Latter-day Saints from Missouri; settlement first in Adams County and later in Pike County, Illinois; exodus west; trip to California during the Gold Rush; experiences crossing the plains and in California; travel through Central America and to New Orleans; trip to visit his mother's home in Cass County, Missouri; visit to the old Baptist meeting house on Fishing River where members of Zion's Camp were protected from a severe storm; journey across the plains to Salt Lake Valley, 1859; settlement in Gunnison, Utah, 1861, then in Washington County, Utah; pioneer life.

Photocopy of handwritten journal of George Washington Gill Averett. Gives a brief account of his life and childhood in Illinois and Missouri, including his conversion and descriptions of persecutions of Mormons in Missouri. He gives details of his trip overland to California to prospect for gold and the sea voyage back to Illinois, setting out for Salt Lake, Utah about 1858 with his wife, settling in Manti, travels and difficulties in Utah's Dixie, trading his land in Dixie for Arizona land, and experiences with Indians. The manuscript copy breaks off in the midst of his account in Arizona.

George Washington Gill Averett (1824-1902) was born in Tennessee and moved to Illinois in 1830. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and followed the Mormons throughout Missouri and Illinois through the 1830s. He traveled overland to Utah in the late 1840s, and spent much of the following decade prospecting for gold in California.
