Correspondence, chiefly 1861-1865, of Alexander T., Joseph R., and William M. Findley, Union soldiers, of Altoona, Pa. Pre-Civil War correspondence concerns the Huntingdon County Temperance Society and the presidential election of 1840. Civil War letters comment on conditions in the Union Army, methods of obtaining commissions, military campaigns, lack of wisdom in freeing slaves, a yellow fever epidemic, the Confederate ironclad Fingal (later the Atlanta), failure of ministers in Missouri to take the loyalty oath, Confederate destruction of Southern homes, and black regiments in the Union Army. Post-war letters primarily concern travel in the West.
