Sept 21. A.P. Abell wrote that the church had unanimously elected "Bro. Thomas" as pastor, but it was feared that he would not accept the call. Requested that Broadus write, urging him to come. Sept. 30. William Thomas, answering the letter Broadus sent him, said that he had written "to the church declining the invitation on the same day your letter was written. It may be we were writing at the same time." His reasons for declining included: "the church here seemed to be more united than formerly, it was preparing to build a much needed new meeting house, because he was their pastor and had promised that he would raise additional funds for the effort. He knew no one who could be obtained for the place he would be leaving. He would leave, besides this church, "two feeble churches with large congregations destitute. The ardent attachment of all my people to my wife and myself presented additional claims upon me." Abram Burwell Brown succeeded Broadus as pastor of the Charlottesville Baptist Church when he resigned to become a professor in the newly formed Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
