Smith, Uselma Clarke, 1841-1902. Collection, 1791-1888.

This collection contains William Jones material. The incoming correspondence, 1791-1827, is mainly addressed to Jones in his capacities as Secretary of the Navy, acting Secretary of the Treasury, and Second Bank of the United States president. It includes a small group of letters, 1813, mostly from Judge Joseph H. Nicholson of Baltimore, concerning Joshua Barney's duel with Lemuel Taylor. There are a few letters from family or mercantile business associates including Joshua and Samuel Humphreys. Among other William Jones papers are: a logbook, 1805-1806, kept by Jones as master of the ship Ploughboy; copies of U.S. Navy estimates for dimensions and equipment of ships of war; estate papers; newspaper clippings; and Smith's biographical notes. The collection includes other miscellaneous letters and genealogies of Smith's family. Clarke, Jones, Loxley and related lines are represented. There is a logbook kept by Lloyd Jones, 1797-1798, of two voyages made by the brig Benjamin Franklin between Philadelphia and Bordeaux. Uselma Clarke Smith's own papers are few: Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice George Sharswood letters, 1864-1871, concerning property settlement; letters and documents, 1868-1888, relative to the schooling of his son Robert M. Smith at Bordentown Military Institute; estate papers, 1863-1899, of Jane Loxley Clarke, Charlotte Jones Smith Goodrich, Catherine Loxley Jones, Mary P. Loxley, and others; law school notes; and miscellany.

Founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin, the American Philosophical Society was the first learned society in the United States. For over 250 years, the Society has played an important role in American cultural and intellectual life. Until the mid-nineteenth century, the Society fulfilled the role of a national academy of science, national library and museum, and even patent office. Early members of the Society included Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush, Stephen Peter Du Ponceau, George Washington, and many other figures prominent in American history. The Archives of the American Philosophical Society consists of 192.25 linear feet of material, organized into thirteen record groups dating back to 1743. The Society's archives extensively documents not only the organization's historical development but also its role in American history and the history of science and technology.

Burd-Shippen Papers, 1708-1792

Title: Burd-Shippen Papers 1708-1792

James Burd (1726-1793) was well-known in colonial Pennsylvania through his role in the French and Indian War, as well as his connections to many of the colony's leading families (most notably the Shippen family). Initially starting out as a merchant in Philadelphia, Burd became increasingly involved with colonial affairs after moving to Lancaster County with his family in 1752. It would be on the frontier where Burd would make his mark first as a soldier, and later as a magistrate. The Burd-Shippen Papers consist mainly of letters and business documents sent to James Burd, with the bulk of the collection relating to the French and Indian War, 1754-1763, in which Burd served as an officer commanding troops at Fort Augusta and elsewhere. The 2.5 linear feet in the collection reflects all aspects of Burd's life in Pennsylvania as a merchant, soldier, and magistrate; as well as his involvement with the Shippen family professionally and personally. Intermixed with items sent to Burd are receipts to his wife Sarah Shippen Burd, and correspondence between Edward Shippen and James Hamilton regarding land matters and Indian affairs in Lancaster.

General correspondence, 1865-1892; business materials, 1866-1869; financial and legal materials, 1840-1892; diaries and copied poetry, 1866-1873; and genealogical documents relating to the Humphreys family. Items focus on the family of Joshua Humphreys (1813-1873). Some of the correspondence deals with business ventures undertaken by Joshua Humphreys following the Civil War, one a general store in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., and the other the General Southern Land Agency, which bought and sold real estate, furnished labor, and negotiated loans for southern companies. The remainder of the correspondence relates to the activities of individual family members. Also included are wills, accounts, contracts, and other legal and financial materials, 1840-1892; diaries containing details of the domestic life of Joshua Humphreys and his family after the Civil War; genealogical records containing biographical information about the Humphreys family; copies of poems; and other items.
