This series functioned to inform the governor of the transactions of the Board of Inspector of the Penitentiary, and later the Board of Inspectors of Convicts. The 1845-1855 annual reports detailed financial transactions, crimes of convicts, counties in which convicted, nativity, and sickness. These early reports are all photocopies. The 1866-1868 reports listed names of convicts as well as their offenses, term, age, height, previous occupation, nativity, when received into the prison system, as well as the county in which convicted, and conduct. From 1869-1877 these reports were made annually, but gave essentially the same information as the 1866-1868 report. From 1880-1906, the reports became biennial. From 1880-1890 the reports were very detailed. Contractors using convicts were named as well as how many convicts the contractor employed, and the number of escapes from prison. The warden, John H. Bankhead, the chaplain, H. Clay Taul, and the physician, Russell M. Cunningham, submitted narrative and statistical reports. Accounts with contractors were given in great detail also. Deaths and causes of death were treated in significant detail as well. There are a number of special reports and tables. Of special interest is the 1882 "History of the Penitentiary," in the 1884-1886 report. The 1892-1906 reports gave basically the same information, but with less detail. Some of the more important contractors included: Charles T. Pollard, Thomas Williams, Pratt Saw Mill Co., Comer & McCurdy, Pratt Coal and Iron Co., Blount Springs, J. W. Comer, J. W. Hardie, Smith & Pace, J. F. B. Jackson, N. J. Stallworth, B. B. Comer, Farris & McCurdy, Warrior Coal & Coke Co., R. J. Thornton, Sloss-Sheffied Steel and Iron Co., and Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Co. Inspectors included R. H. Dawson, A. T. Henley, W. D. Lee, William S. Kyle, F. McLemore, and R. J. Harrison, among others.

The Erskine Ramsay Papers consist of correspondence, reports, speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs, blueprints, and maps documenting Ramsay's career in the mining and steel manufacturing industries in Birmingham, Ala. for the years 1886 to 1953. For the period of Ramsay's employment by the Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company, 1887-1901, there is correspondence and reports which reflect the economic and managerial difficulties of the company and provide statistical data on its yearly production. For the years 1902-1953, the Papers provide information on Ramsay's continued involvement in the mining and steel industries, his work with local charities, and his term of service as a member and later president of the Birmingham Board of Education, 1922-1941. Also included is a substantial amount of geneological information on the Ramsay family.

Lukens Steel Company. Executive officer files, 1903-1979.

Title: Executive officer files, 1903-1979.

The records are a selection of files from some of the executive officers of the Lukens Steel Company of Coatesville, Pa. They begin in 1903, when the company discontinued the use of general letterbooks. Only two of the company's top officer, Charles Lukens Huston and his son Stewart Huston, preserved their files more or less intact. The other series are fragments preserved by either of the two Hustons. Taken together, the files cover most of the important developments in the 20th century history of the company, but with a shifting emphasis. Subjects include the electrification and modernization of the plant, the employment of African-Americans and European immigrants, the impact of the Depression, the cultivation of new markets, World War II business, and post-war conversion and growth. One of the more interesting units contains minutes and memoranda of the Business Problems Group of the Society of Friends, an group of Quaker industrialists who attempted to respond to the labor radicalism and strife of the 1915-23 period with Quaker-style conciliation and consensus-building. Post-1949 presidential files consist entirely of speeches and public relations material. The files of Charles Lukens Huston are relatively complete. He was in charge of operations and production and also served as Works Manager until 1925. From 1928 to 1963 the files of his son, Stewart Huston, primarily reflect his duties as corporate secretary and his role representing the company in a variety of trade and civic associations. After his election to the vice presidency following his father's death in 1951, his files contain an incresing amount of material generated by the board of directors and its committess, providing more detail on executive decisions. The files of both Hustons reflect their adherence to conservative and evangelical causes. There are a number of interesting tangential items relating to bomb shelters and uranium prospecting in the 1950s, and examples of health-food diet regimens from the 1920s. The files of Darwin S. Wolcott and the comptroller's office include material on Lukens's contribution to the Manhattan Project. The files of the treasurer's office include material from the Coatesville Opportunities Council regarding rehabilitation of low-cost housing in the late 1960s.
