Title: Alexander W. McAlister Papers, 1886-1946

Alexander Worth McAlister was founder and president of Pilot Life Insurance Company and a leader in the North Carolina Conference for Social Service and the North Carolina State Board of Charities and Public Welfare. Correspondence, writings, pictures, and other material of Alexander W. McAlister chiefly includes correspondence with associates in business and civic organizations and versions of published and unpublished writings by McAlister. Most items date from 1930 through 1943, although there is some earlier correspondence and some writings from as early as the 1880s. Well-documented in these papers are McAlister's activities as a member of the North Carolina Conference for Social Service and the North Carolina State Board of Charities and Public Welfare, as well as his association with various civic organizations in Greensboro. Much of the correspondence and many writings relate to particular concerns of McAlister, including prohibition, the New Deal, golf, child welfare, prison reform, the Community Church in Greensboro, and education. Although there is some material relating to McAlister's business activities, documentation in these papers of his work as an insurance executive and in other business ventures is incomplete. There also is little personal material regarding McAlister's family and close friends.

The collection consists of the personal and labor-related papers of John Ramsay from 1928-1979. The CIO series (1939-1955) includes correspondence from CIO president Philip Murray and correspondence and reports from John Riffe. The international unions series (1937-1969, 1977) consists mainly of materials relating to the United Steel Workers of America (USWA) including correspondence from David McDonald and I.W. Abel. The USWA/CIO/AFL-CIO: Community Relations Departments series (1936-1964, 1974) deals with Ramsay's community relations work for the CIO during its "Operation Dixie" organizing campaign in the South from 1946-1953. Includes correspondence from Lucy R. Mason, reports, radio transcripts, surveys, and denominational and geographic files. The National Religion and Labor Council of America series (1942-1971, 1978) includes correspondence from Executive Directors Witherspoon Dodge and Clair Cook, Executive Secretary Willard Uphaus and minutes, reports, financial statements, and printed material. The National Council of Churches series (1939-1977) contains correspondence from Executive Directors Jesse Bader and Cameron Hall and minutes, speeches, and financial records pertaining to the United Church Men and the Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations reflecting Ramsay's involvement with the United Presbyterian church.

J. B. Matthews (1894-1966) was a Methodist missionary, college professor, author, lecturer, and prominent conservative spokesman. Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, statements, speeches, reprints, clippings, broadsides, newsletters, press releases, petitions, and other printed material, chiefly 1930-1969. The principal focus of the collection relates to the work and research of Matthews and his associates in the area of anti-communism, particularly in connection with Matthews' role as Director of Research for the Special Committee on Un-American Activities of the U.S. House of Representatives (1938-1945), Executive Director of the Permanent Subcommittee on Government Operations of the U.S. Senate (1953), and a consultant for John A. Clements Associates. Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. Sidney Hillman papers, 1930-1946 (bulk 1935-1945)

Title: Sidney Hillman papers

Papers documenting Sidney Hillman's activities as the ACWA's president during the Depression, New Deal, and war years, as well as his work with the NRA, the National Defense Advisory Commission, and the War Production Board. Sidney Hillman and the ACWA played crucial roles in founding the CIO. Hillman's correspondence with Walter Reuther and George Addes of the United Automobile Workers (UAW) and Emil Rieve of the Textile Workers' Organizing Committee reflects that effort. The Roosevelt era brought both increased visibility and power to Hillman and the union. In 1933, Hillman was chosen to serve on the National Recovery Administration's Labor Advisory Board. The materials from this NRA period describe the Roosevelt administration's attempts to draw up codes of fair competition to determine production quotas and fix wages and hours in order to bring about economic recovery. The NRA records also contain Hillman's correspondence with government officials as well as leaders of labor unions and of private firms. There are also some reports and raw data used by the NRA in developing its codes. In 1940, as U.S. involvement in World War II became increasingly likely, Roosevelt organized the National Defense Advisory Commission (NDAC) to coordinate economic mobilization for the war. Hillman was named to the Commission; later he was tapped to be associate director of the War Production Board. The NDAC materials in this collection document Hillman's experiences and include correspondence with William Knudsen. There are also some reports and directives prepared by the War Production Board. Other notable topics include: aid to free labor organizations in Europe during World War II; anti-fascist efforts by U.S.labor organizations; civil rights; the clothing trade in the U.S. and Canada; economic conditions during the depression, particularly in the U.S. garment industry; international labor activities; Jewish workers in Palestine; labor organizing in the U.S. and Canada; relations with other unions; the Spanish Civil War, including labor aid to and participation in the Republican cause; union involvement in politics and government in the U.S.; the role of women and minorities in the labor movement; and worker education. The collection centers on the Southern black education efforts of James Hardy Dillard. Contents include correspondence (1905-1935) of Dillard, his diaries and journals (1919-1926), speeches and articles. There is considerable material regarding the Negro Rural School Fund, the Phelps-Stokes Fund, Washington, D.C. (also known as the Anna T. Jeanes Fund), the John F. Slater Fund, the Southern Education Board, and the General Education Board, as well as Dillard University, New Orleans, and William and Mary College, Williamsburg, where Dillard served as Rector (1917-1940). Other topics of interest are the Education Commission to East Africa (1923-1924), the University Commission on Southern Race Relations (1912-1927), and the Scottsboro case (1931-1933).
