Title: Corporate records, 1836-1956.

The records represent the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad Company and 97 of its predecessor, subsidiary or affiliated firms. Most companies are represented by minute books, although there are also board papers, account books, stock ledgers and reports to the I.C.C. for many of the larger and later companies. The minutes for most companies are most informative for the period prior to PRR control in the early and mid 19th century. After the PRR took over, the boards would be primarily concerned with approving contracts, land sales and construction or abandonment of facilities. The records as a whole are thus most useful for tracing the construction of the individual lines, their consolidation into the PRR system, and details of physical plant.
