The organization was dedicated to strengthening the United Nations (UN) into a world federation with powers over armaments and aggression. Butler's correspondence, mainly with national and local UWF officers, emphasizes problems of world federation, international law, peace, disarmament, and the structure and functions of the UN; its efforts to secure support from professional groups, politicians, and state legislatures; and opposition to it (especially 1950-1953) by the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and other groups and individuals.
