Contains correspondence, lab notebooks, and the Henles' unpublished autobiography; the bulk of material is from the 1970's and 1980's and a smaller portion of the collection dates back to the 1950's and 1960's. The collection's prevalent emphasis is professional research work and correspondence. Little personal correspondence is included. The majority of materials are reflective of the research work Werner and Gertrude Henle conducted at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. While Werner and his wife Gertrude conducted the majority of their research jointly, the correspondence is predominately Werner's. Gertrude's involvement, however, can be more clearly discerned in the lab notebooks in which she appeared to record lab results as frequently as Werner. The collection would be valuable to any scholar researching the history of virology and its practical application to disease prevention as well as such topics in scientific research as procuring funding for research, the necessity for collaboration in scientific studies and the issue of gender in scientific research.

Includes discussion of their work establishing a connection between Epstein-Barr virus and Burkitt's lymphoma (the first time a virus was associated with a cancer), as well as their work on influenza, mumps, and hepatitis vaccines. Also includes Henle's c.v. and two unpublished papers on the Epstein-Barr virus.

Werner and Gertrude Henle Papers, 1955-1987

Title: Werner and Gertrude Henle Papers 1955-1987

Werner Henle, the son of a surgeon andgrandson of anatomist-histologist Jacob Henle, was born in Dortmund, Germany. He attended the University of Munich from 1929-1930 and transferred to the University of Heidelberg in 1930 where he finished the course work needed for medical degree in 1934. Gertrude Szpingier was born in Mannheim, Germany and received her medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in 1936. The Henles are the most well known, however, for their research on Epstein-Barr virus. Their discovery of the relationship between Epstein-Barr virus and cancer demonstrated that the presence of certain viruses in the nucleus of a cell could transform a healthy cell into a malignant one.

Title: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Records 1855 - 2006

Established in 1855, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was the first hospital in the United States to care exclusively for children, and was key in establishing the foundations of modern day pediatric medicine. Medical staff members at CHOP have been at the forefront of innovation for decades, and their work has had impacts which can be seen to this day, in the form of the Isolette Incubator, the Measles vaccine, and its participation in The Human Genome Project. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Records (1855 to 2006) extensively documents the activities of the Public Relations and Planning and Development Departments from the early 1960’s to the early 1990’s. The bibliographies, published works, correspondence and interviews with several major figures in pediatric medicine, such as Doctors C. Everett Koop, Jean Cortner, and Gertrude and Werner Henle, can also be found within. An extensive portion of the collection is in non-document form, and consists of bound volumes, photographs, negatives, 35 mm slides, and film reels.
