The bulk of the collection relates to operations in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest and includes: engineering blueprints for tracks, bridges, locomotives, outbuildings, generic stations and other equipment; construction engineering notebooks of Robert L. Donald; freight tariff books; materials relating to the Oregon and California Railroad, the Oregon Central Railroad, the Northern Pacific Terminal Company, the Oregon, California and Eastern Railway, and the Portland and Willamette Valley Railroad Company; and employee timetables for Southern Pacific and affiliated lines. Oregon and California Railroad materials include minutes of the board of directors, 1870-1919, with materials relating to Henry Villard and Ben Holladay. Records of the Oregon, California and Eastern Railway include minutes of the board of directors. Most of the materials date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This collection includes 11 documents and letters related to activities at Camp Floyd (Fort Crittenden), Utah, in the aftermath of the Utah Expedition (1857-1858). Materials include lists of men and property employed at both Rush Valley and Camp Floyd, several letters from Parmenas Taylor Turnley to Bennett Smith describing transfer operations from Rush Valley to Camp Floyd as well as the need for added security against supply theft, and an itinerary of James Hervey Simpson's travels from Carson Valley to Camp Floyd. Also included is a letter from Ben Holladay describing the moving of supplies from Carson Valley to Camp Floyd. In addition to the Camp Floyd materials, the collection also contains a folder of ephemera (bank deposit slips, receipts from the Oregon and California Railroad Company, and promissory notes) relating to the business dealings of Willis Dunegan (Dunagan, Dunigan) and his relatives.
