Consist of the transcripts of the proceedings (2 vol.), the Board's final report, and the exhibits submitted by the union and the steel companies. Union exhibits before the first Board include a statement of issues and the position of the union by its attorney, Arthur J. Goldberg; correspondence between the union and the major steel corporations, April-October, 1959; a brief by Goldberg on the national emergency issue; a brief by Leon H. Keyserling on the steel strike and the recession of 1958; a brief by Meyer Bernstein on the issue of foreign competition; and briefs by staff officers of the union on other specific economic issues. Major steel companies involved in the strike include the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation, ARMCO Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Great Lakes Steel Corporation, Inland Steel Company, Jones & Laughlin Steel Company, Kaiser Steel Corporation, United States Steel Corporation, Wheeling Steel Corporation and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, among others. Exhibits presented by this group include a statement of management's position, correspondence between the corporations and the union, April-July, 1959, statistics bearing on the dispute, and statements on inflation, profits, and foreign competition, among other documents. Exhibits submitted to the second hearing include exchanges of offers between the union and individual companies; statements on behalf of the union by Goldberg, David J. McDonald, USWA president, and George Meany; and statements on behalf of management by R. Conrad Cooper and H.C. Lumb, among other documents.

Title: Joseph N. Scanlon Papers

Joseph Scanlon served as a cost accountant, an open hearth tender, and a steelworkers local union president before being hired as director of research and engineering for the United Steelworkers of America in 1946. While serving on several committees regarding industrial production and working for the United Steelworkers of America, he developed the Scanlon Plan of gain-sharing which required company management and union workers' cooperation to increase production efficiency. This collection contains correspondence regarding the Scanlon Plan at various companies and Scanlon's correspondence with other individuals interested in industrial relations. There are also photographs of Scanlon and various papers about profit sharing and other issues surrounding company finances.

This collection of an international labor leader includes correspondence, subject files, diaries, and artifacts from his pre-war involvement with the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC), his post-war positions in the United Steelworkers of America (USWA), his service as a labor representative and consultant in Europe for the USWA and others, and his work on the reorganization of the United Mine Workers. There are seven German films on labor topics and post-war trials, and many photographs on labor in America and circumstances in post-war Europe, including a rich collection of images from the Aliquippa strike, the Little Steel strike, and other actions pertaining to the emergence of SWOC. Personal items include a diary and memorabilia from his military service during World War II, and postcards and photographs from his travels worldwide.
