Jenks, John, 1751-1817. Business and estate records, 1783-1817.

Title: Business and estate records, 1783-1817.

Consists of an invoice book kept from 1783 to 1816, a letter book kept from 1797 to 1817, and probate records for Jenks' estate in 1817. The first two volumes provide information on Jenks' business ventures. In some cases, letters (orders) and invoices corresponded, showing what Jenks did and did not received from England. A large array of goods was imported, including thumb latches, drawer handles, flat screws, shoe buckles, textiles of all types, watch parts, Britannia teapots, chandeliers, ovals for card table legs, organ pipes, and a large number of books listed by title. Names of ships upon which goods were shipped is usually included. Miscellaneous items are laid in the volumes, including a note about the confiscation of goods during the War of 1812. The estate papers indicate the Jenks died intestate. In addition to a court decree, a room by room listing of house personal possessions and accounting of his stocks and financial notes is featured.
