The narrative records an 1856 expedition from Fort Ripley, Minnesota, to Fort Pierre, South Dakota, by way of Fort Snelling, then by steamer to Fort Ridgely, and across the bad lands. The text describes the forts and country through which they passed and records army life in a humorous manner. There are annotations in other hands, including notes to a "Compositor." The narrative is illustrated by 21 original drawings and watercolors by Cap. Alfred Sully.

Muster and pay rolls of three companies: 2nd regiment, Company I, at Fort Abercrombie, Dakota Territory, 31 Dec. 1860-28 Feb. 1861; 2nd regiment, Company K, at Fort Ripley, Minn., 31 Oct.-31 Dec. 1860; and Company G, a group of recruits for the 5th and 10th Regiments, en route to Utah, 1 May-13 June 1858. Lists for each man rank, place and date of enlistment, and amount of pay. Remarks include circumstances of entering and leaving the company, daily and extra duty, disciplinary measures, and pay stoppages. Commanding officers include Seth Eastman, Dixon S. Miles, and George Washington Patten; paymaster is Henry Prince.

The Michael K. Lawler papers consist of personal correspondence, drawings and official papers from 1819 to 1884 including documents concerning Gallatin County property and the Illinois Bar admission. Also in the collection are letters, hand-drawn maps, drawings from the Mexican War, a handwritten poem, "The Battle of [Monterrey]," by George W. Patten (the "poet laureate" of the Army), an autograph endorsement signed by Ulysses S. Grant, October 13, 1861, and three record books. Postwar letters include an unsuccessful effort to gain a patronage position under President Grant. There is also one folder of prewar documents concerning the family of wife Elizabeth Crenshaw.
