This collection documents the financial, manufacturing, corporate and legal, and commercial history of Smith & Winchester Manufacturing Co., its predecessor Phelps & Spafford, and companies it acquired. The records date from 1833 to 1960, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1870 to 1940. The majority of the collection consists of bound volumes, including ledgers, journals, cost books, shipping books, order books, price books, cash books, letterbooks, and payroll books, dating from 1833 to 1960. Also included is correspondence between Smith & Winchester and its customers and affiliated businesses and persons. The collection contains extensive information about Smith & Winchester's products, including machine patents, machine and equipment specifications, repairs records, and customer agreements and contracts. A notable series of photographs, glass plate negatives, and drawings are included. The images depict Smith & Winchester's papermaking machinery products and its manufacturing operations. The collection also contains numerous three-dimensional objects, including wooden foundry patterns.

Papers of brothers Arthur and Edgar Winchester, businessmen and manufacturers of Windham, Connecticut, and New York, NY. Arthur's financial records include investments with a firm in New York, and receipts for his membership in the New York Yacht Club; memoranda about building a dining room and other rooms in a house, that could be related to the New England Houston Narcotic Cure Company, undated; and a letter in which he accepted the resignation of George Hart, supervisor of the Smith and Winchester Company factory in South Windham, Connecticut. Edgar's papers consist of correspondence and maps relating to property he owned in Ohio, 1902; and financial records including checks issued in settling his father Harvey Winchester's estate, 1900.

The bulk of the collection consists of letters written and received by Arthur S. Winchester. Much of the collection is made up of letters written by Arthur to his brother, Edgar, between 1884 and 1897. General correspondence written by various individuals precedes letters arranged by author. These letters, primarily business related, were written to Arthur by C.M. Dally, James P. Lee, Charles Saunders and Edward G. Westcott. In addition to the correspondence, the collection contains many documents relating to the Lee Arms Company, including coded telegrams and a lengthy transcription of coded communication between Arthur, James P. Lee, C.M. Dally and others. James P. Lee and the Lee Arms Company were at one time partnered with E. Remington and Sons; invoices and correspondence from Remington can be found in this collection along with court documents pertaining to a lawsuit between the State of New York and E. Remington and Sons. Patent documents in the collection, many in French or Italian and dating mostly between 1871 and 1878, appear to be research material for the Lee Arms Company or represent patents they hoped to or did purchase. Many of these patents are in the name of a Mr. King. Of particular interest are a series of documents related to E.L. Zalinski and the transfer of his fuse patent. Letters from Edwin L. Palmer and J.S. Parsons, relating to the New England Houston Narcotic Cure Company, indicate the wide-ranging interests of Arthur Winchester. He was an officer in the company. Finally, personal bills of Arthur, Edgar and Harvey Winchester and papers relating to Harvey's estate are arranged at the end of the collection.
