George Engelmann was a botanist and physician in St. Louis, Missouri and was chief scientific advisor to Henry Shaw on the development of the Missouri Botanical Garden. He bought the Bernhardi herbarium and the first books for the library on a trip to Europe for Henry Shaw in 1857-1858. His herbarium was given to the Garden by his son after his death.

The bulk of the collection consists of the papers ofIllinois State's Attorney Julius S. Grinnell, who led the prosecution in theHaymarket trial in 1886-1887. These include trial evidence, notes and drafts oflegal briefs, personal papers, and printed ephemera. The collection alsoincludes a few items that were added to Grinnell's papers in the 1950s-60s bycollector Frederick B. Adams. Trial evidence is chiefly in German, and consistsof manuscripts, correspondence, leaflets, and other items seized from theoffices of the , a publication of theInternational Working People's Association, with which many of the defendantswere involved. The manuscripts are chiefly holograph drafts of editorials byAugust Spies and Michael Schwab; much of the correspondence is to Spies,including several letters from Johann Most, editor of the New York paper . The evidencealso includes other socialist and anarchist newspapers, as well as fragments ofthe bomb that exploded in Haymarket Square. Papers of the State's Attorney'sOffice include Grinnell's notes and drafts of legal briefs prepared for thetrial and for the defense's appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court in 1887. Theseinclude a draft letter from a police spy to Lucy Parsons, Albert Parsons'swife. Also present are personal papers of Grinnell: most relate directly to thetrial while others document his later career. The collection also containsprinted ephemera of the socialist and anarchist movements, including a numberof items relating specifically to the Haymarket affair. Through his craniometic studies of human races, the Philadelphia physician Samuel George Morton (1799-1851) exerted a profound influence on the development of physical anthropology in antebellum America, and made substantial contributions to mineralogy, paleontology, and natural history. Relating primarily to Morton's scientific interests, the Morton Papers include insights into Morton's perspectives on education, medical practice, geology and mineralogy, craniology, paleontology, the Wilkes Exploring Expedition (also known as the United States Exploring Expedition 1838-1842), and his two major monographs, the and . Several of the letters were written by Morton in his capacity as corresponding secretary of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Also included in this collection are Morton's "Some Remarks on the Infrequency of Mixed Offspring Between the European and Australian Races" (1850), Joseph Barclay Pentland's notes on the aborigines of Peru (ca. 1840?), and newspaper clippings on Morton's death; a diary of Morton's trip to the West Indies, 1834, a set of craniological sketches for use in Crania Americana, and a microfilm of letters in private hands, written to Morton, 1838-1844 Crania Americana Crania Aegyptiaca

Some letters are written to President Rutherford B. Hayes and concern the Commissionership of Agriculture, for which LeConte was considered, but not appointed. Letters of John Eatton LeConte and Joseph LeConte are included.

This is a collection of chiefly letters and botanical notebooks. Lecture notes and Engelmann's doctoral thesis are among the earliest papers. A series on herbaria and collectors includes plant exchange lists and other records concerning the Bernhardi and Engelmann herbaria and early plant collections coordinated by Engelmann in the western United States. The botanical notebooks are primarily notes on species from the botanical literature, herbarium specimens, and live plants in field and garden. Drawings and manuscripts by Engelmann, Arthur Schott, Paulus Roetter and others, and correspondence are found throughout. The correspondence (primarily letters to Engelmann) relates to botany, botanical surveys and expeditions sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and other U.S. government agencies. Letters discuss the following expeditions: the Emory expedition in New Mexico, the Fremont expedition in the Rocky Mountains and California, Hayden expedition on the upper Missouri River and Colorado, and the Nicollet, Powell, Simpson, Wheeler, Whipple and Wilkes expeditions. Many of the letters include descriptions of local and national politics. There is extensive correspondence with Smithsonian representatives.

There are two scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings--one dealing with the Mexican boundary surveys and the Santo Domingo Commission, the other containing clippings from the Chicago Evening journal in 1863-64 dealing with the exploration of the Far West. The collection also includes photocopies from the accession records of the ISU Library listing books from Parry's personal collection in the ISU Library, Iowa State professor L.H. The bulk of the collection documents William Emory's service on the Mexican boundary survey in the years 1848 to 1858. Series I contains correspondence with members of the boundary commission, the American and Mexican Survey parties, and government officials. Correspondence for 1849-50 describes California during the Gold Rush and Forty-Niners on the Gila route. There are also other military records. Series II contains letters and other records from Emory's service in Kansas and in the Civil War.

This is a collection of documents from a variety of sources. The papers are chiefly records from Shaw's hardware business, an import/export business trading chiefly with Sheffield, England. Indian trade, St. Louis real estate investment, and the founding of the Missouri Botanical Garden and Tower Grove Park are documented. The real estate was concentrated in downtown Prairie des Boyers and Barriere des Moyers areas. Types of business records include account books, sales books, waste books, journals, ledgers, invoice books, correspondence, receipted bills, cancelled checks, bank drafts, promissory notes, bills of exchange, deeds of trust, sight drafts, contracts, plat plans, invoices, and deeds. Goods traded include furs, lead from Galena, Illinois, tobacco from Chariton, Missouri, and imported blankets, cutlery, earthenware, hardware, smithy tools, and gun parts. Other papers include correspondence with Ferdinand von Miller, sculptor, and drawings related to the design and construction of sculpture in the Missouri Botanical Garden and Tower Grove Park. There are also diaries (1840-44) of travels in Europe and Africa, notes on history, botanical notes, lists of plants, reflections on St. Louis in 1819, and autograph albums. Personal correspondence is mainly from his family in Rochester, New York and Sheffield, England. Correspondents include Carolyn Shaw Morisse; father, Joseph Shaw; mother, Sarah (Hoole) Shaw; sister, Sarah Shaw; and cousin, Henry Elliott Hoole, mayor of Sheffield, England. Business correspondents include Hugh Campbell (Philadelphia attorney), Samuel Eadon (New Orleans agent), John Feazel (tobacco agent), Alexander Grant (New Orleans agent), and Peter Lindell (business partner).
