Two groups of letters written to John B. and Anna Kellogg of New York. The first group consists of six letters written to Anna in January 1866 from her mother and sister, Emma, who were traveling from Chicago on the steamboat Pauline Carroll down the Mississippi River bound for New Orleans, La. While writing from the boat they describe the people they met, the cities they visited, events that took place on the boat, and interactions they (along with Emma's sister, Mary) had with passengers and the captain. Once in New Orleans at the St. Charles Hotel, they relate, in detail, their impressions of the city and the people. They frequently comment on the oppressive heat, food, clothing people wore, places they visited, and modes of transportation. Places they visited include the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Jackson Barracks, Canal Street and Jackson Square (for shopping), the opera, the theater, the French Market, Ridge Hill Cemetery, and the homes of some locals. In a letter dated January 15, Emma comments on the effect that the Civil War had on Bayou Sara, La. Their impressions of Southerners are recorded in letters dated January 14 and 20. From New Orleans they are assumed to have made their way to Cuba. The second group consists of 15 letters written to John B. Kellogg from G. W. Alexander, from Nov. 1868 through Oct. 1869, regarding the purchase and shipment of cattle from New Orleans to Chicago, Ill. Throughout the correspondence, Alexander describes the condition of the cattle, which steamers they were shipped on, their price per head, how much capital he requires to make the transactions, and how much profit he expects to receive. But beginning in Jan. 1869 he expresses disappointment in the cattle market and invests in "boiling" in Bryan City, Tex. and has a new plan involving cattle: hides, tallow, and beef. His last letters implore Kellogg to please advise and provide letters of credit.

Kellogg, John B. Bills and papers, 1858-1872.

Title: Bills and papers, 1858-1872.

A collection of bills, plus a few letters, a photo of a house, and some other miscellaneous documents relating to John B. Kellogg of Troy, New York. A number of the bills are for house construction, paint, wall paper, furniture, and carpeting. Apparently, the Kelloggs added to their house in 1861, and undertook some home improvements at that time. Among the furniture pieces that were purchased were a tete-a-tete, a camp chair, bureaus, and stands. Little information is given about the pieces, however. Other bills are for books and stationery, photos (one bill is from the Matthew Brady studio in New York City), coal and firewood, jewelry, clothing, and textile fabrics. Furniture and other goods were shipped from New York City, and the shipping bills usually specify the goods. Also found are three letters written in 1868 from Emma in New York City to her sister Mrs. Kellogg. Emma reported on prices of curtains, carpeting, and furniture; evidently, she was helping Mrs. Kellogg choose some new furnishings for the house. Two letters written in 1872 are about moving Mr. Kellogg's headstone from Cambridge, New York, to Troy, where the old inscription was cut off so a new inscription could be added. A few tax and insurance bills are included with the collection. Also found is a booklet with rooms drawn on various pages and extensive notes about the size of each room and the placement of doors and windows. From notes such as "parlor door" and "hall door," it is possible to discern the placement of each room in respect to the other rooms. Depicted are the front hall, front and back parlors, dining room with pantry, a bed room to the rear of the dining room, with closets and a bathroom or dressing room, an upstairs hall (with various closets and a back bedroom), front chamber, back parlor chamber [i.e. chamber above the back parlor], a back hall with bedroom (noted as being over the dining room), servant's bedroom, and assorted closets and storerooms. The last page includes the dimensions of a chair and a sofa. Also in the collection is a carte-de-visite photograph of a house in the Greek Revival style, but this is not the Kellogg home in Troy. Front and back views of a fringed chair are drawn on the back of the calling card of Miss Mary C. Wood. A calling card for the Kelloggs is also in the collection.
