This series documents Pierre S. du Pont's activities on the Business Advisory Council and National Labor Relations Board. Correspondence describes P.S. du Pont's attitudes towards the Banking Act of 1935, the Wagner Labor Relations Bill, and the Townsend Old Age pension proposals. These papers show that during the early days of the New Deal, Pierre S. du Pont maintained a close relationship with NIRA administrator Hugh Johnson and he hoped that FDR's recovery program would be based on a system of "industrial cooperation" that would recognize the predominant role that big business was playing in American economic life. The papers document Pierre S. du Pont's support for the Gerard Swope plan for "industrial self government".

Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

The records primarily document the presidency of Lammot du Pont (1926-1940), with some fragmentary records from the Irénée du Pont period (1919-26). The records describe the Du Pont Company's transformation into a diversified chemical company in the years after the First World War. Records document the organization of the Chemical Department under the leadership of Dr. Charles Lee Reese. The collection describes Du Pont's research and development program which during these years focused on dyes, celluloid, cellophane, plastics, ammonia, textile fibers, and artificial rubber. The evolving relationship between corporate strategy, organizational structure, research and development is described. The records also trace the company's post World War I public relations campaign during which it sought to overcome the "Merchant of Death" label. Du Pont's response to the Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, and the C.I.O.'s organizing campaigns are also described in these records. There is also much information on company advertising, participation in the New York World's Fair of 1939-1940, and attempts to market Du Pont products or establish plants in foreign countries, particularly Chile, China, Japan, and in Russia both before and after the revolution.

The records include a chart describing average wages and wage rates for all Du Pont Company employees (1840-1938). This chart has data on working hours, number of employees, average hours and monthly wages, with United States Bureau of Labor Statistics cost of living adjustments. Also included are quarterly reports (1950-56) on labor costs and output per man hour. Reports to the company's general managers contain statistics on income distribution, industrial production, consumption, wages, price, population growth, state taxes, and other macroeconomic trends. These reports also include advice on plant location and relocation.

The twentieth century records of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. document the transformation of the company into a modern, centrally administered industrial giant. The presidential papers of T. Coleman du Pont (1903-1913) describe the company's incorporation and reorganization. The Walter Carpenter presidential papers (1940-48) document the history of the Du Pont Company at mid century. This was the period of Du Pont's closest association with General Motors, and the papers describe this relationship and the antitrust suit that resulted. The Carpenter files contain correspondence with many of the leading industrialists, military men, and scientists of the 1940s and 1950s. They describe the role that Du Pont played during the Second World War, its response to the government regulation of the period, and the contributions that it made to the development of atomic energy during the period of the Manhattan Project.
