Charleston and St. Andrews Parish, S.C. merchant and South Carolina state legislator. Among the properties he owned were Hickory Hill Plantation on the Ashley River and an adjacent plantation called Savages. In 1760 he married Elizabeth Holmes. Among their children were William Branford Farr and Elizabeth Farr, who married John Splatt Cripps.

Title: Thomas Farr estate papers, 1789-1794.

Papers consist of estate sale accounts and a letter. Accounts (1793-1794) are for the sale of a group of sixty-one slaves (named in document, as well as their buyers) and lands belonging to the estate of Thomas Farr. Lands include acreage in Beaufort and Ninety-Six District (S.C.), Hickory Hill Plantation, Savages Plantation, and lots in Columbia (S.C.). Letter (1789 Jan. 17) from John Lloyd in Charleston (S.C.) to his nephew Thomas B. Smith in London (England) discusses a painting by Smith which Lloyd received; legislative actions in South Carolina regarding debtor and creditor and other issues; Lloyd's advocacy of "the new Constitution"; Lloyd's romantic interest in Miss Lowndes; Smith's nephew William Farr "lately arrived here in perfect health from Holland"; Smith's sister, a guest at Hickory Hill Plantation; "the Estate" [of Thomas Farr?]; and other matters.
