Samuel and Charles McLain migrated west in the 1850s to find their fortunes prospecting for gold. Their father, James McLain, was a Pennsylvanian who had settled with his wife in Mountsville, Ohio, where they raised a family of six sons and three daughters. In 1852, Sam, then 24 years old, left the family homestead for Oregon, and settled in Philomath, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Considered to be an early pioneer, he helped to blaze the trails that opened up the Yaquima Bay country. In 1857, Charles McLain followed his brother west, traveling to various places, including Nebraska and California, in his search for gold. He eventually made his way to Oregon in 1865 to join his brother.

Sam McClain was born in San Angelo, Texas. He came to Alaska in the late 1940s and worked as an architect for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District Office, in Anchorage from 1949 until his retirement in 1979. He married Christine Ferrari Reeder in Anchorage in 1950. McClain was an artist, specializing in pen and ink drawing and water colors. He studied under watercolor artist Rex Brandt and Robert E. Wood in California in the late 1960s. He was best known for his drawings and water colors of Russian Orthodox churches and other historical buildings in Alaska. McClain contributed drawings and designed the cover for Fern Wallace's book, The Flame of the Candle: a Pictorial History of Russian Orthodox Churches in Alaska, which was published in 1974. He also taught watercolor art classes and performed volunteer work for the Anchorage School District and other local organizations. Sam McClain died in Anchorage in 1994.

Sam McClain came to Alaska in the late 1940s. He worked as an architect for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Anchorage from 1949 until his retirement in 1979. In 1950, he married Christine Ferrari Reeder, who worked for the Army Signal Corps until 1971. Both McClains had many interests outside of their Army jobs. Christine was a prolific freelance writer and the features editor for the Anchorage Times; and Sam was an accomplished artist, specializing in pen and ink drawings and watercolors. At some point, Bruce Kendall, an Anchorage hotel owner, purchased two of McClain's watercolors, which were of Russian churches. Realizing how rapidly the old churches were disappearing from the landscape, Kendall commissioned McClain to embark upon a project to paint all of Alaska's Russian churches and chapels for which photographs, drawings, or other likenesses could be found. Sam McClain became best known for his drawings and watercolors of these churches and other historical Alaska buildings. When Fern Wallace published The Flame of the Candle: a pictorial history of Russian Orthodox churches in Alaska, Sam McClain contributed many drawings and also designed the cover. McClain also taught art classes and performed volunteer work for the Anchorage School District and other local organizations. He died in Anchorage in 1994, five years after the death of his wife Christine.

Title: McLain Brothers Papers 1857-1865.

The McLain Correspondence contains ten letters and one newspaper clipping, an obituary and remembrance of Samuel McLain (1828-1910). Samuel wrote four of the letters in which he described his feelings about the war, religious camp meetings, and the hardships of life and prospecting in the West. Charles McLain wrote five letters, one with a note from Sam on the back, mainly to family members in Ohio. Like Sam, Charles discusses the war and describes the perils of life in the West. In his letter of March 5, 1865, he advised his father and his brother John against moving west, especially since they were doing so well raising tobacco. Charles dates his letters from many different cities, including Leavenworth City, Kansas, Elkhorn City, Nebraska, and Ophirville, California. The first letter in the collection, dated March 6, 1862, is from cousin Nancy Miller to John McLain, Sam and Charles' brother who lived in Ohio.

The collection consists of Sam McClain's personal papers and files concerning his artwork. The collection consists of biographical materials, training and employment records, volunteer service records, and various art related files. The bulk of the collection consists of art related place name files for 135 different localities. These files contain photographs and negatives, photo post cards, color slides, original pen and ink and pencil drawings, sketches, photocopies of his watercolors of Russian Orthodox churches, newspaper and magazine clippings, publications, correspondence, and other art related materials. Most of these files concern Russian Orthodox churches in Alaska, while others relate to other historical structures in Anchorage, around Alaska, and in McClain's home town of San Angelo, Texas. Other materials in the collection include art prints and notecards, Christmas greeting cards, photographs, color slides, color photo post cards, and several original watercolors.

It is estimated there have been at least 150 Russian Orthodox Churches in Alaska's history, with churches built in nearly every village under Russian influence, from Sitka to Attu, to St. Michael, and along the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers. 106 of these churches, many of which are no longer in existence, are represented in this collection. Two additional watercolors, of a nautical theme, complete the collection.
