The collection contains letters (1805-1834) to Peachy Ridgway Gilmer, some concerning George Rogers Clark, José Francisco Correia da Serra, and the education of relatives' children, from William Armisted Burwell, Alfred H. Dashiell, Dr. Charles Everett, Francis Walker Gilmer, Harmer Gilmer, James Blair Gilmer, Thomas Walker Maury, Franklin Minor, Peter Minor, William Radford, Fleming Saunders, David Watson, and David Yancey. There are three letters (1814) from Francis Walker Gilmer to George Divers, Martha Jefferson Randolph, and George Ticknor (concerning the pronunciation of words in Virginia); and three undated essays by Francis Walker Gilmer concerning fire, vapors, and the contract theory of government. Also includes notes (1833-1889) of Emma Walker Gilmer Breckinridge and Peachy Ridgway Gilmer concerning the compilation of his papers; a letter (1790) of Thomas Walker Gilmer to Dr. George Gilmer and Lucy Walker Gilmer; and a letter (1807) of Martha Walker Divers to Mary House Gilmer.
