Correspondence includes letters to and from Smith, letters of his contemporaries, and later letters involving family members or research into Smith's life. Estate records consist largely of land records relating to the estates of various individuals including Davy Crockett, Toribio Losoya, and Lysander Wells (whose estate papers also contain his personal papers, including letters relating to the burial of James Collinsworth and papers relating to Wells's administration of the estate of James W. Tinsley). Land records include applications for land grants or the return of land, survey field notes, deeds, inventories of land holdings, and other records, mostly relating to land in San Antonio and Bexar County and dealing chiefly with Smith's acquisition and surveying of land for himself and others. Financial documents include promissory notes, bills and accounts, drafts, and receipts. Legal documents include powers of attorney, contracts and agreements, and documents associated with legal proceedings and include a photocopy of the will of José Antonio Navarro. Miscellaneous business papers include Smith's inventories of his papers, receipts for documents, memoranda, and fragments. Government records include items dating from the government of San Antonio under Mexico and local government as part of the Republic of Texas. Printed material contains a transcript of Smith's published obituary. Other persons represented include Hezekiah Bissell, William Henry Daingerfield, George M. Dolson, Charles P. Flack, Enoch Jones, Henry Wax Karnes, R.R. Royall, Juan Nepomuceno Seguín, John S. Simpson, David C. Van Derlip, and Cornelius Van Ness.
