Robert Baral papers 1876-1980
Robert Baral was a free-lance writer and sometime publicist. The collection consists of photographs, clippings, programs, and correspondence relating to Ziegfeld, the , and the revue era. With its roots in the late nineteenth century Europe, the revue has been defined as a form of light entertainment that consisted of topical sketches, comedy, music and dance, which was loosely held together by a theme. In America, the revue evolved full of spectacular effects under the inspired direction of Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr., who was often imitated but never surpassed. Ziegfeld Follies

A chorus score for Friml's "The Vagabond King." This is a reproduction of a manuscript score that was likely used for a Madison, Wisconsin, production. Each page bears the legend: "Lithographed by Wisconsin Blueprint Co." No publisher or date appears on the music. Annotations suggest this score was used for rehearsing the men's chorus, although all parts are shown.

Ziegfeld, Flo, 1869-1932. Florenz Ziegfeld Collection, 1893-1979 (bulk 1910-1930).
Title:
Florenz Ziegfeld Collection, 1893-1979 (bulk 1910-1930).
Photographs and sheet music make up the bulk of the Florenz Ziegfeld Collection, 1893-1979, which documents Ziegfeld's career as a producer and, to a lesser extent, the contributions of some of the theater professionals associated with him. Also present is a very small amount of material concerning posthumous Ziegfeld revivals, spinoffs, and movies. The full range of Ziegfeld's producing work is represented in the Productions series, which is divided into four subseries: A. Variety Shows, 1907; B. Revues, 1907-31; C. Fully Staged Productions, 1920-46; D. Unidentified Productions, nd. Ziegfeld's variety work for the Syndicate is represented by a Jardin de Paris program from June 1907. The Revues subseries holds photographs, programs, clippings, and other materials for the Ziegfeld Follies, Ziegfeld Midnight Frolic, Ziegfeld Nine O'Clock Revue, and an unidentified revue. The Fully Staged Productions subseries contains photographs, programs, and ephemera for eleven "book" shows. Most of this material documents each show's original Ziegfeld production, but later stagings by other producers are also represented. Photographs of unidentified productions complete the Production series. The Individual series contains personal and production photographs for nearly 150 performers associated with Ziegfeld, as well as materials concerning Ziegfeld himself. The series also includes a small number of clippings and other materials such as Ziegfeld's letters, telegrams, and legal documents. The Sheet Music series contains music for over 600 songs published between 1905 and 1957. Music dating from 1915 to 1924 predominates. While most of the numbers were intended for Ziegfeld's revues, some were popularized by Follies performers but not used by Ziegfeld, and a very small number appear to have no direct Ziegfeld connection. The series also includes songs from several of the posthumous New York Follies revivals, a 1955 Las Vegas show, and the films The Great Ziegfeld (1936), Ziegfeld Girl (1941), and Ziegfeld Follies (1946).

Stewart, Michael, 1929-1987. Michael Stewart scores, 1870-1984.
Title:
Michael Stewart scores, 1870-1984.
The Michael Stewart scores consist of sheet music from both produced and unproduced Stewart shows from the 1940s through the 1980s. Among the original scores for Broadway shows represented in this collection are Cy Coleman's Barnum (1980) and I Love My Wife (1979), and Max Showalter's additional music for Harrigan 'n Hart (1985). The Michael Stewart scores also contain an extensive amount of material for shows which were presented in places other than New York, including John Addison's score for The Amazons (1971), Shelley Mowell's Solomon Grundy (1953), and Jule Styne's musical version of Treasure Island, Pieces of Eight (1985). Although he chose not to be credited on the production, Stewart also assisted in the 1984 Broadway revival of Rudolph Friml's The Three Musketeers and the collection includes the music for many Friml songs. There are also collections of late nineteenth and early twentieth century music, including numerous songs by the composers Harry Warren, George M. Cohan, and David Braham that were gathered as research for the projects, 42nd Street, George M! and Harrigan 'n Hart respectively. The scores are arranged alphabetically by show title and by song title within each show.

Otto Harbach Papers, 1870-1990, 1895-1963
Title:
Otto Harbach Papers 1870-1990 1895-1963
The Otto Harbach Papers include correspondence, business papers, scripts, scores, lyrics, personal papers, photographs, and printed matter documenting his personal life and career, and also a particular period in the American musical theater, from ca. 1908-1938, when Harbach created most of his works. Correspondence is mainly between Harbach and his family in Salt Lake City, and later with his son William. Family members include his brothers, Arthur, James, Julius, and William Hauerbach, and his sister and brother-in-law, Sadie and Avern Poulton. Included in the small amount of correspondence from friends and colleagues are several interesting letters from Arthur Hammerstein, Oscar Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, and Carl Sandburg. The collection is particularly strong in covering the business aspects of Harbach's work, documented with contracts, copyright, and royalty information. Scripts form the largest series and include copies of most of Harbach's works. The scores are mostly for HAYFOOT-STRAWFOOT (music by Jerome Kern) and COUNTER MELODY (music by Peter De Rose) and are notable for the holographs that make up part of the scores for HAYFOOT-STRAWFOOT. There is also a good collection of photographs, including family, colleagues, ASCAP events, friends, and a selection of production photos. Personal papers include genealogical information, writings other than scripts, ephemera and a long oral history interview conducted by William Harbach shortly before his father's death.

Title:
A.P. Schmidt Company archives, 1869-1958 (bulk 1895-1920).
The A.P. Schmidt Company archives contains music, correspondence, business and financial records, and related documents. These materials provide a detailed look at the management, daily operations, and history of the Schmidt firm. In the music series, which contains manuscripts and some printed music and is the largest part of the collection, are examples of music composed by Americans at the turn of the twentieth century and selected for publication by Schmidt. The majority of the music in the collection is in autograph form; some are holographs in the hand of the composer and many are the work of Schmidt company editors and arrangers. It is from these manuscripts that the Schmidt company prepared its publications. The music in the collection is principally for voice, chorus or piano, with some examples of large-scale orchestral music as well. It should be noted that none of the manuscripts of Edward MacDowell, one of Schmidt's most important composers, accompanied the collection to the Library of Congress. It may be assumed that after MacDowell's death, most of his manuscripts were returned to his widow, Marian MacDowell (see the Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection). Among the major correspondents in the collection are Edward Ballantine, Florence Newell Barbour, Floy Bartlett, Mrs. H.H.A. Beach, Robert Braine, Gena Branscombe, F. Leslie Calver,Rosseter G. Cole, Mabel Daniels, Roland Diggle, G. A. Grant-Schaefer, Cora W. Jenkins, Boris Levenson, Marian MacDowell, John W. Metcalf, T.
