Letters to Gabriel Manigault include a letter (1805) from his wife Margaret concerning family matters and a riding accident; and letters (1807, 1808) from his brother Joseph Manigault concerning the Chesapeake-Leopard affair of June 22, 1807, the possible effects of war on South Carolina, prices of meat and wine, bonds with Mr. Middleton and Mr. Gibbes, negotiations with Mr. [Nathaniel] Heyward regarding Heyward's possible purchase of Pumpkin [Pompion] Hill Plantation, the embargo, and his hopes that the embargo will "bring all our enemies to reason, and convince them that they cannot dispense with our produce and our vessels." Joseph Manigault's letters also reference Gabriel Manigault's sale of the Oaks Plantation (at Goose Creek, Berkeley County, S.C.) to Mr. Deas; mention that the horse races will be well attended despite the scarcity of money; and include an estimate of the value of lot no. 1 on John Street in Charleston (S.C.) and Samuel Wragg's lot on Meeting Street opposite the mall (likely Wragg Mall).

Papers consist of correspondence, a plantation journal, estate records, and miscellaneous items. Miscellaneous items (1828-1856) include bonds; a "List of Negroes at Dusty Hill" (1823); memoranda (1816-1826) concerning operations at Saltponds [Plantation]; a statement (1831) concerning eight slaves (named) given to Charles D. Manigault by his father Joseph Manigault; and a prescription (1808) written for a slave named Bess. Estate records (1835-1861) include a copy of Joseph Manigault's will, receipts, and estate accounts and inventories. Many receipts pertain to payments made to and for Miss Henrietta A. Drayton (sister of Charlotte Drayton Manigault) by Gabriel Manigault, executor of the estate. There is also an estate account book (1843-1856) for the estates of Joseph and Charlotte Drayton Manigault.

Included are letters between the Manigaults and the related Heyward and Pringle families, and correspondence (1833-1862) of Charles Izard Manigault with Robert Habersham & Son, rice factors of Savannah, Ga. Other correspondents include Joseph Manigault, Arthur Middleton, Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809), Lewis Morris, Elizabeth Heyward Manigault, Gabriel Edward Manigault, James Coward (overseer of Silk Hope Plantation), and James Haynes (overseer of Gowrie Plantation on the Savannah River). There are also letters (1831-1832) from Petty Vaughn of London (England) regarding his purchase of portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Izard from Mrs. John Singleton Copley. A letterbook (1846-1848) of Charles Izard Manigault in Paris (France) contains copies of letters to Henry W. Conner, Louis Manigault, plantation overseers, and others concerning family, business, and plantation matters. Financial records include accounts of Charles Izard Manigault with Welles & Co. (Paris, France) and Robert Habersham & Son (Savannah, Ga.), and Manigault family household receipts.

Bond, 14 June 1804, for $10,750 drawn on the Bank of South Carolina; notarized document, 10 June 1807, recording Keith's default on the note; documents, 22 Oct. 1822 - 13 Nov. 1826, re purchase of and collection on insurance policy for Keith's one-quarter interest in the Saluda, a ship grounded en route from New York to South Carolina; legal document, 30 Nov. 1826, re suit for damages for Keith's hay lost on the Saluda; bills on account with Keith' attorney, Seth Lothrop; notes drawn on the firm of Prescott, Bishop, & Gray; and accounts with Joseph Manigault and John Mayes Undated letter, [ca.1824], from Charleston author and barrister, W.R.H. Papers re Keith's daughter, Caroline E. Keith consist of 24 items, 1811-1828, including letter, 28 Mar. 1825, from "cousin Olive," re news of mutual friends from Bridgewater and Trenton [New Jersey?], and the passing of a friend who took oil of Tansy for a toothache, suffered convulsions, and died; school bills for tuition and firewood; lists, 1822, of students taught by Mrs. R. Hahnbaum and Mrs. E. Palmer; undated list of students and parents or guardians to be billed; and undated letter from Mrs. Sarah Palmer, re leaving her teaching post for health reasons; also includes receipt, 15 Jan. 1823, of payment for John Read's board, paid in cash and cloth for 178 days.
