Consists of letters received and signed copies (transcripts, handwritten) of letters sent by James Manning, receipts, accounts, inventories, a journal, a history of Rhode Island College written (ms.) by Manning, and catalogs of books. The collection documents the early history of Brown University (Rhode Island College), particularly Manning's presidency, his efforts to raise funds (subscriptions) from Baptists for support of the college and to obtain books for the college library; and the discussion of religion by Baptist clergy in America and Great Britain. Subjects related to Brown University history include the decision to locate the college in Providence, the need for library books and sources for books, the occupation of the college edifice by American and French troops during the Revolution, and employment of faculty. Subjects related to the the Baptist church include the Philadelphia Baptist Association, the First Baptist Church in Providence, local revivals, the condition of and attitudes toward religion in America and Great Britain, including controversies between Baptists, Presbyterians, and other denominations, responses to texts published by clergy, and actions in Great Britain that were unfavorable to the church. Manning traveled in New England, Pa., N.J., and N.Y., and often preached along the route. In 1779 he visited West Point, N.Y., and met several notable figures of the Revolutionary War, including George Washington. The work and family life of John Gano, Stephen Gano, and Solomon Drowne are discussed in the correpondence. Correspondents include Abraham Booth, Robert Carter, Caleb Evans, William Gordon, John Rippon, John Ryland, Hezekiah Smith, Samuel Stennett, and Benjamin Wallin.

Matthias B. Tallmadge was the fifth judge for the District of New York and the first judge for the Northern District of New York. His papers include correspondence from the Tallmadge family, as well as many prominent individuals from the period, both related and unrelated to the Tallmadges. The papers also include materials from Tallmadge's tenure in the District of New York and later the Northern District of New York.

Messer, Asa, 1769-1836. Asa Messer papers 1791-1859 (bulk 1796-1826).

Title: Asa Messer papers 1791-1859 (bulk 1796-1826).

Consists of letterbooks, correspondence, sermons, speeches, essays, prayers, lecture notes, diaries, and legal papers dating from 1791 to 1859, although the bulk dates from 1769 to 1836. The collection documents Messer's activites as President of Brown University; his sermons, prayers and religious essays; and his financial investments and inventions. Messer's roles as tutor and professor are sparsely documented. The Baptist church and the debate among Baptists regarding the divinity of Jesus Christ, including Messer's position on the topic, are also documented. Correspondents include David Benedict, Richard Furman, John Evans, James M. Winchell, and William Rogers. Brown University student topics documented include student behavior and Messer's subsequent disciplinary actions, which were usually rustication or dismission; financial matters; courses of study; conferment of degrees; and recommendations for study at the Andover Theological Seminary. Other Brown related topics documented include honorary degrees conferred, the appointment of tutors, salaries for fellows, and the library. The collection contains Messer's commencement addresses and other addresses, titled Essays, which he delivered at the college's Sunday chapel services. Messer was licensed to preach by the First Baptist Church in Providence, R.I. Although he was never a pastor, Messer preached in various churches in R.I. The collection contains his sermons, which are in notebooks that also bear the locations and various dates when the sermons were delivered. The collection also includes Prayers written by Messer, which were usually delivered at Baptist meetings and publc events. Baptist related topics documented in the correspondence include forms of baptism, foreign mission boards, religious revivals, and baptisms by Stephen Gano. Various beliefs about the divinity of Jesus Christ are mentioned throughout the correspondence, which includes references to Arianism, Socinism, and Unitarianism. Messer resigned from the Presidency of Brown amidst a controversy about his views on the divinity of Christ. The letters also document Messer's interests in politics and mechanics. His opinions on the Missouri Compromise are revealed in a series of letters to Samuel Eddy. Messer's interest in mechanics and natural philosophy are reflected in applications for patents for mill machinery, his lecture notes, and his correspondence on light refraction. He invested in the Wrentham Manufacturing Co., a Mass. cotton mill. There are some letters regarding his investment. Diaries created by Asa Messer Williams, grandson of Asa Messer, while he traveled in Germany and Italy in 1852 and 1853, are in the collection. Sermons written by Williams are also in the collection.

Correspondence, 1800-1850, of Tallmadge and members of his family, and legal papers, mostly 1805-1811, pertaining to causes heard before Tallmadge as judge of the Southern District of New York. There are a large number of letters exchanged by Tallmadge and his wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Governor George Clinton and Cornelia Tappen Clinton. Many were written from Charleston (South Carolina), Savannah and Augusta (Georgia), and Fayetteville, North Carolina, during 1811-1818. Others whose letters appear more or less frequently include: George Clinton; Theodorus Bailey; Tallmadge's father, James Tallmadge and his brother, James Tallmadge, Jr., both of Poughkeepsie; his sons, Charles W. Tallmadge, Theodore Bailey Tallmadge, and George Clinton Tallmadge (including some written while he was a student at Union College); his brother-in-law, the Rev. Stephen Gano, of Providence (R.I.); Stephen Gano's daughters Clarissa Ann Gano and Sally S. Gano; Laura Tallmadge, Ann Tallmadge, and Nathaniel P. Tallmadge; E.A. Rodman, writing to Elizabeth Tallmadge from St. Augustine (Florida), 1822-1824; Anthony Lamb; Joseph Coutant; and Charlotte Horton Rowe, who wrote from India in 1816 about her work as a missionary there; members of the Tappen and Sudam families. They are primarily family letters, dealing with personal matters, but there are many pertaining to such matters as sales of land, elections, politics, appointments, banks, personal financial matters, and litigation. Some papers deal with the family's Baptist faith; one document, written by Susan Wright, a slave of Elizabeth Tallmadge, describes her profession of faith in the Baptist church and her baptism, as well as giving some information about her family history. The legal papers related to Tallmadge's work as judge of the Southern District of New York contain affidavits, depositions, pleas, minutes, briefs, notices, opinions, charges to juries, and other miscellaneous papers. Many items relate to the trial of Samuel G. Ogden, who was charged with providing and fitting out a vessel, arms, and equipment for General Francisco de Miranda, preparatory to an expedition against Caracas, Venezuela, in 1806. Some others relate to: U.S. vs. Aquila Giles, Nicholas Fish, and Matthew Clarkson; and to William Jackson, et al., vs. ship Frederick.
