Includes 28 manuscript and printed items "to illustrate the official life of the State [of Florida], from the courts to the post office, from the banks to a tailor's apprentice indenture" (prelim. sleeve [i] recto). Florida governors represented include William Pope Duval, James E. Broome, and Richard Keith Call. Businesses represented include the Apalachicola Land Company and the Pensacola & Georgia Rail Road Company. Also included are 17 business-related letters. Reflected in the documents are the economic transition of the state from cotton-based and slave-labor plantations to land development by Northerners and the rise of winter-grown produce. The early histories of major cities in the state -- Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Apalachicola -- are also represented.

Title: Whitaker and Snipes Family Papers, 1780-1889

The Whitaker and Snipes families were planters of Halifax County, N.C., and Hinds County, Miss. The collection includes scattered correspondence, financial records, and other materials. Most slave-related items appear to be from Mississippi. Correspondence includes letters from relatives in Leon County, Fla., Webster County, Ky., and Person County, N.C., concerning agricultural, family, and financial matters. Civil War materials include a Confederate soldier's letter describing the Battle of Fredericksburg, 1862; typed transcriptions of Confederate army military correspondence regarding an engagement at Staunton River Bridge, Va., on 25 June 1864; a mother's 1865 letter to her daughter concerning the turmoil in North Carolina near the end of the Civil War; and other letters describing financial and family losses on the homefront. Nearly all of the financial records, chiefly bills and receipts, relate to Anderson Snipes in Mississippi. Included are records about cotton growing; farm and labor records relating to freedmen; medical receipts; promissory notes, including notes for the hiring out of slaves; materials relating to the purchase, medical care, and death of slaves; and tax receipts. Miscellaneous materials include two 1865 oaths of allegiance; an 1865 summons to appear before the Provost Marshal of Freedmen; an 1867 voter registration; photographs of William Dunn Moseley and of Live Oak Plantation, probably located in Florida; and a few other items.

Letters, 1849-1852, to and from Whitemarsh Seabrook written mainly during his terms of office as South Carolina governor; most of the letters are marked "Private and Confidential." Included are letters of governors W. D. Moseley of Florida, George W. Towns of Georgia, and J. A. Quitman of Mississippi, in answer to a circular letter sent Setpember 1850 calling for organized resistance to the North. There are also letters from F. H. Elmore regarding the work of the central committee; on the eligibility of General James Hamilton for U.S. senator; and from William Gregg on manufacturing in Southern states. Also included are bills for slaves and deeds relating to Edisto Island, S.C., and St. Luke's Parish, S.C., 1840 and 1854-1859.

Drew (1877-1881); William D. Bloxham (1881-1885, 1897-1901); Edward A. Perry (1885-1889); Francis P. Fleming (1889-1893); Henry L. Mitchell (1893-1897); William S. Jennings (1901-1905); Napoleon B. Broward (1905-1909); and Albert W. Gilchrist (1909-1913). All the letterbooks are originals except for Volume 6 (John Milton, 1861-1862) which is a photocopy. In addition to governor's correspondence, Volume 2 (1844) contains the correspondence of Thomas Duval, Secretary to Governor Branch and Volume 83 contains military appointments of the Adjutant General from 1908-1909.
