The route book collection documents the history of a variety of circuses. The quantity and quality of information varies widely. Route books always document the route of a circus for a given year but often they include information on important events which occurred during the season and the names of performers and personnel involved with the circus, equipment statistics, and photographs. A performer or person was generally not included in a route book unless they were involved with the circus for the entire year.

The collection contains many examples from the Adam Forepaugh Circus, Al G. Barnes Circus, Barnum & Bailey Circus, Buffalo Bill's Wild West, Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, Ringling Bros. Circus, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and the Sells Bros. Circus. There are posters from the United States, France, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Russia, India, Spain, Mexico, Italy, and Japan.

The bulk of the film and video collection was created by amateur photographers although a small number of items in the collection were commercially produced. The collection documents almost every aspect of the circus from the logistics of moving from town to town to performances. 155 reels are in color and 49 reels have sound.
