American modernist poet.
James Vincent Cunningham was born in Maryland in 1911, and was educated at Stanford University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1945. He has taught at Stanford, the University of Hawaii, and the University of Virginia. He was Assistant Professor of English at the University of Chicago from 1946 until 1952 and a Professor at Brandeis University from 1953 until his 1980 retirement.
Cunningham published several volumes of poetry and a volume of collected essays. He died in Massachusetts in 1985.

Mary Elizabeth Cunningham served in various capacities at the New York Historical Association, including editor of "Yorker" magazine and "New York History."
Mary E. Cunningham attended Cornell University and the State University of New York at Albany. In 1939 she joined the staff of the New York State Historical Association. During her tenure with that organization she served in a number of capacities including editor of "The Yorker" and "New York History", assistant to the director, associate director, director of school services, and librarian. In 1957 she began working for the New York State Education Department as a special consultant. She served the administration of John F. Kennedy as a branch chief in the Food and Drug Administration and later became the first head of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare's Consumer Protection Division. Following her government service Cunningham worked as an editorial director of social studies for Rand, McNally publishers.
Among her other activities, Cunningham was the author of "Our York State" a syndicated column about New York State topics. She was also a founder of "American Heritage" magazine and served as its first editor. She was actively involved in the development of teaching materials for the teaching of New York State History and was an active member of the Democratic Party. Cunningham died at Cooperstown, N.Y.

The papers, covering 1906-1981, are divided into three major series: Winters papers, Lewis papers and related materials. Winters papers, which are subdivided according to genre, consists of personal correspondence (primarily in-coming), professional correspondence with colleagues and publishers, articles and essays, critical texts, poetry, fiction, photographs, and miscellany. The personal correspondence files include letters conveying opinions on the works of fellow writers or letters seeking Winters criticism of their works. In addition the papers document Winters involvement with topics of local interest such as the David Lamson murder case, the integration of Ravenswood High School, and Los Gatos community issues resulting from Winters' service as Zone Warden during World War II. His correspondence with his publishers, particularly Alan Swallow, trace the course of Winters publications; also documented is John Williams plaigarism of Winters' work.
