Correspondence, memoranda, lists, publicity material (such as mailings, posters, clippings and speeches) and financial records documenting Senator Thurmond's own campaigns and those he was involved in, except the 1956 senatorial and 1976 presidential campaigns. This series also includes polls and opinion surveys, congratulatory and thank you letters, lists of grants obtained by the Senator for South Carolina, patronage files, case files and petitions. These items relate to campaign planning and administration, fund-raising and financial management, publicity and public relations, and information gathering on opponents and their campaigns. It may be in- or out-of-state. Of particular interest is material concerning the 1954 "write-in" senatorial campaign, the 1964 Goldwater and 1968 Nixon presidential campaigns, and the 1978 senatorial campaign.

The majority of the collection details Bernice V. Robinson's role (late 1950s-1980s) as a teacher and social activist for voter education, adult literacy, and child development; with other materials (1960s-1980s) relating to her personal, religious, and social work. Biographical papers include transcripts of her oral history interview. Topics discussed include her life and family; race relations in Charleston; work in New York City; differences in segregation in the South and North; her work with the Charleston Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and with her cousin Septima Clark, Esau Jenkins, the Progressive Club, and Highlander Folk School, educating adults for voter registration and establishing schools on John's, Wadmalaw, and Edisto Islands; working for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Andrew Young, Rosa Parks, Dorothy Cotton, Hosea Williams, Bayard Rustin, Medgar Evers, and James Bevel; working for a variety of other civil rights related and social welfare programs; and her unsuccessful political career. A series of Robinson's works contains copies of speeches on a number of topics. Collection contains campaign records from 1974, 1978, and 1980, but chiefly consists of clippings kept by Ravenel's 1974 campaign staff; arranged in three series: Personal Papers, Clippings and Audio-Visual Materials. Personal Papers mainly consist of campaign records, 1974, 1978, and 1980. Files include financial information, press releases and newsletters, publicity and voter research conducted by the Hart Research Association, Inc. for all campaigns. Campaign ads, bumper stickers, and other campaign paraphernalia are included in the publicity files. Also included in the personal papers are documents relating to the 1974 State Supreme Court case disputing Ravenel's residency. Clippings kept by Ravenel's 1974 campaign staff make up the bulk of the collection and offer a surprisingly detailed account of the election process, with extensive collection of articles from international, national, regional and local newspapers. Feature articles are included along with editorials and local level responses to the campaign. Independent and county newspapers are well represented. Topical clippings files were kept on major campaign opponents by Ravenel's office. Persons represented include: Maurice Bessinger, Carroll Campbell, John Bolt Culbertson, William Jennings Bryan Dorn, Peggy Jennings, James Edwards, Earle Morris, Jr., and Eugene "Nick" Zeigler.
